Could Brinker International (EAT) Stock Be the Restaurant Turnaround Story Investors Have Been Waiting For?

Brinker International, Inc. (NYSE: EAT ) stock recently surged after issuing strong guidance that eclipsed mixed quarterly results. For fiscal 2027, Brinker projects adjusted EPS of $12.60, $13.40 on revenues of $6.15B, $6.27B, topping Wall Street consensus estimates of $12.50 per share.

In Q4 2026, total revenues rose 5.1% year-over-year to $1.53 billion, slightly beating consensus, while adjusted EPS of $3.07 missed expectations by $0.02. Consolidated comparable sales rose 5.0%, fueled by a 5.6% jump at Chili's, marking 5 consecutive years of comp growth. Full-year revenues hit $5.8 billion with restaurant-level operating margins expanding to 18.0%.

This performance brings up a core question: Does Brinker International, Inc. (EAT)'s operational turnaround justify higher valuation multiples, or will cost pressures and high financial leverage cap further upside?

Analyst sentiment has become increasingly bullish following initial FY27 projections. Stephens maintained an Overweight rating and $220 price target on August 12, describing FY27 guidance as encouraging despite a mixed Q4 and suggesting investors buy on the print.

On August 17, Piper Sandler analyst Brian Mullan raised his price target from $166 to $240 while maintaining a Neutral rating, citing Chili's strong momentum and management's comments that July traffic had significantly accelerated.

The bull case centers on Chili's multi-year traffic gains, which suggest structural brand relevance rather than growth driven solely by pricing. Strong cash generation also supports continued restaurant investments, debt reduction, and higher average unit volumes (AUVs), creating greater operating leverage across the system.

The bear case stems from Brinker's substantial debt burden, leaving the company more exposed to demand shocks and rising refinancing costs. Weak traffic at Maggiano's further weighs on portfolio performance, while persistent wage and food inflation could pressure margins if pricing power weakens.

Institutional interest reflects measured positioning. Of the 1,006 tracked funds, 48 held shares in Q2 2026 compared to 49 in Q1 2026. Top institutional holders include Holocene Advisors (1.11M shares worth $186M) and Arrowstreet Capital (1.07M shares worth $179M). Short interest remains moderate, indicating the market is not heavily positioned for a downside collapse.

Investors should watch whether July's accelerated sales momentum carries through Q1 FY27, how effectively management stabilizes Maggiano's comps, and whether restaurant margins hold near 18% against persistent beef and labor cost headwinds.
