India's Nifty holds key support as small-cap index hits record high
India's benchmark index settled lower on Wednesday amid a late adjustment, yet the broader market's resilience and record small-cap highs signal underlying investor confidence despite narrow trading ranges.
India’s benchmark Nifty 50 index settled lower at 24,207.75 on Wednesday, erasing earlier gains after a late-day CAS adjustment triggered a nearly 68-point downtick. Despite the modest decline, the broader market demonstrated notable resilience.
The Nifty Smallcap 100 index defied the frontline index's weakness, touching a fresh all-time high. Market participants rotated capital into metals, banking, and financial services, while technology and fast-moving consumer goods stocks faced sustained selling pressure.
On the daily chart, the Nifty formed a sizeable bearish candle and closed near its session low, slipping below its 8-day exponential moving average. However, the index successfully maintained the critical 50-day moving average support level, preventing a deeper correction.
Market anxiety remains subdued, with the India VIX dropping 4.6 percent to 10.5, marking a multi-month low. This compressed implied volatility suggests investors are currently pricing in limited near-term turbulence, reinforcing the market's consolidation phase.
The benchmark index remains confined to a narrow 24,000 to 24,400 trading band. A sustained breakout above 24,400 is required to signal renewed strength and open a path toward the 24,550 to 24,650 zone in the near term.
Conversely, the 24,000 mark serves as a vital support zone. A decisive breach below this threshold, or a failure to hold Thursday’s immediate support at 24,115, could accelerate selling pressure and deteriorate broader market sentiment.
Stock Spotlight: Cochin Shipyard
In individual equities, Cochin Shipyard is exhibiting technical signs of a potential breakout from a three-month rectangle pattern. The stock has seen gradually increasing volumes and trades above its 20, 50, 100, and 200-day moving averages.
Momentum indicators support this improving structure, with the 14-period relative strength index entering bullish territory and the daily MACD registering a positive crossover. A sustained move above the 1,555 to 1,558 rupee zone could target 1,640 rupees, with 1,680 rupees as a medium-term objective, provided risk is managed with a stop loss at 1,502 rupees.
