AMC Ticketing Platform Stalls Under Record Demand for Dune: Part Three Release

AMC Entertainment’s digital infrastructure briefly faltered under unprecedented traffic for the new Dune film, highlighting both the strong revenue potential of premium theatrical formats and the persistent operational vulnerabilities of the exhibition chain.

AMC Entertainment’s mobile app and website experienced significant disruptions Tuesday following the ticket release for Dune: Part Three. Chief Executive Adam Aron stated that the “crushing volume” of traffic briefly slowed or glitched the company’s online ticketing systems.

The platform handled traffic roughly triple that of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the highest-grossing film of 2026 to date. Digital queue lines on third-party vendor Fandango also exceeded one hour during the initial release window.

Downdetector logged more than 1,000 outage reports, primarily from mobile users encountering “Failed to fetch” notifications and rate limit errors. Some customers reported the application crashing immediately upon launch, though system stability improved approximately an hour after the tickets went on sale.

This marks a recurring operational challenge for the exhibition giant. AMC previously faced consumer backlash over similar ticketing disruptions during the rollout of major franchises like The Odyssey and Avengers: Doomsday.

For investors, the outage underscores the intense consumer appetite for premium exhibition formats. Aron noted extraordinarily high demand for IMAX screenings and popular locations, a trend validated by immediate secondary market activity.

Tickets for IMAX 70mm screenings of the film are already being resold on eBay for $200 per listing. This mirrors the scalping activity seen during The Odyssey release, where some sellers sought up to $1,000 per ticket.

The financial stakes for this release are substantial given the franchise's trajectory. The Dune series has demonstrated consistent box office growth, generating $410 million worldwide in 2021 and $714 million for Part Two in 2024.

The film will debut the same weekend as Avengers: Doomsday, setting up a direct box office battle. However, Dune: Part Three will exclusively occupy domestic IMAX screens during its opening weeks, securing a crucial revenue moat.

Fans have already dubbed the simultaneous release “Dunesday,” hoping for a dual-franchise box office phenomenon similar to 2023’s Barbenheimer. While the concurrent release could drive overall theater attendance, AMC must ensure its digital infrastructure can reliably capture this peak revenue without friction.
