China’s Star Market 50 rebounds as investors pivot to tech amid uneven recovery

A sharp August rebound in Chinese chipmaker indices highlights how a K-shaped economic recovery is forcing investors to abandon struggling traditional sectors in favor of artificial intelligence plays.

The Star Market 50 index, which is composed primarily of chipmakers, has rebounded 9 per cent in August. This recent gain recoups a portion of the severe 26 per cent slump the index suffered during the previous month.

The market movement underscores a profound shift in capital allocation across Chinese equities. Investors are increasingly betting on artificial intelligence and technology stocks, responding directly to the nation's distinctly uneven economic trajectory.

This K-shaped recovery has created a stark divergence in corporate performance and macroeconomic indicators. The technology sector has emerged as a crucial driver of growth, standing in sharp contrast to the broader economic stagnation.

Traditional pillars of Chinese growth are currently failing to provide adequate momentum. According to data from Barclays, consumption and the housing market still account for roughly 70 per cent of the world’s second-largest economy. Both sectors continue to act as heavy drags on overall expansion.

Because these massive traditional segments are underperforming, market participants are redirecting their focus toward the expanding tech segment. This dynamic is fueling a broader revival in AI-related equities as funds seek out the few available avenues for growth.

Market analysts believe the current rally in technology names is not merely a short-term bounce. Zheng Xiaoxia, an analyst at Hua An Securities, sees continued upside potential for the sector based on current market dynamics.

“There’s a big chance that technology stocks will revisit their highs of June and there’s more room for the rebound to run,” Zheng said. This outlook reflects a broader consensus that the sector's recent outperformance has further upside potential.

The fundamental justification for this optimism will soon be tested by corporate earnings. “The resilience of the tech industry will be confirmed in the interim reports coming in late August,” Zheng noted.

For portfolio managers, the data suggests that navigating China's current economic environment requires a highly selective approach. Until the consumption and property sectors stabilize, technology and artificial intelligence will likely remain the primary focal points for equity capital.
