SEBI warns investors against unregistered live trading tips on social media

India’s market regulator has issued a formal caution against unregistered social media influencers offering real-time stock tips, highlighting growing risks to retail investors from unauthorized financial advice.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has issued a formal warning to market participants regarding the proliferation of live trading sessions and unregistered advisory services on social media platforms. The regulator noted a distinct surge in individuals offering real-time strategies and stock positioning tips to large online audiences.

According to the regulator, these broadcasts frequently feature enabled live chats where unauthorized financial advice is actively exchanged among viewers. Sebi stated that it is observing these sessions drawing a substantial number of viewers while operators falsely present themselves as qualified securities market experts.

These individuals routinely provide detailed directives on entry and exit points, alongside specific strategies for trading market indices. Sebi noted that some operators claim to execute real-time trades, showcasing their performance and projected market targets based on live data patterns to lure followers.

The warning underscores strict existing rules governing the dissemination of live market data to the public. Entities are prohibited from sharing this sensitive information unless it directly supports the orderly functioning of the securities market or fulfills specific regulatory requirements.

This regulatory intervention highlights the mounting challenges authorities face in policing financial misinformation across digital spaces. For retail investors, the proliferation of such unverified tips poses significant capital risks, often leading to severe losses when actual market movements contradict influencer predictions.

By drawing a firm line around what constitutes legitimate investor education, Sebi aims to curb the rapid monetization of unregistered advisory services. Genuine investor awareness initiatives are expected to operate with a 30-day data lag and without monetary incentives, clearly distinguishing them from real-time trading solicitations.

Market professionals and registered entities may soon face increased scrutiny to ensure their digital operations do not inadvertently cross into unregistered advisory territory. This public caution serves as a clear signal that regulatory oversight is actively expanding to match the evolving methods of retail market participation.

The rise of financial content creators has blurred the lines between entertainment and regulated financial advice. Regulators globally are grappling with similar trends, but Sebi’s explicit focus on live data misuse marks a targeted effort to protect domestic market integrity.
