Adani Enterprises Targets Nifty Top Gainer Status After 34 Percent Rally in 2026
Adani Enterprises shares have surged 34 percent this year, drawing renewed institutional backing and positioning the conglomerate as a primary vehicle for investors betting on India’s long-term infrastructure expansion.
Adani Enterprises shares have jumped 34 percent in 2026, putting the conglomerate on track to become the top gainer on the NSE Nifty 50 Index. This marks a stark reversal from the end of 2022, just before a January 2023 Hindenburg Research short-seller report triggered a selloff that erased more than $150 billion from the group’s market value.
The rally is underpinned by fresh share purchases from major investors, including The Capital Group, Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and SBI Funds Management Ltd. Morgan Stanley also initiated coverage in June with an overweight rating, signaling growing confidence as the group rebuilds support following US bribery allegations against Gautam and Sagar Adani and ongoing scrutiny from India’s market regulator.
This financial revival re-establishes the conglomerate as a key proxy for India’s broader infrastructure boom. Capital is flowing into its ports, airports, and power assets, while overseas lenders are demonstrating renewed appetite for exposure. Highlighting this trend, AdaniConneX Pvt., the group’s data-center joint venture with EdgeConneX, recently secured an $800 million loan to fund expansion.
“Adani is essentially playing the India growth story through infrastructure,” said Vinit Bolinjkar, head of research at Ventura Securities, who has maintained a buy rating on the flagship since 2022. He noted that few businesses can provide the 20- to 30-year visibility offered by the group’s infrastructure assets.
A 2024 securities fraud case against the Adanis was permanently dismissed, removing a lingering overhang on the group. Additionally, MSCI Inc. recently raised the free-float factors for several Adani firms in its latest review, a move likely to spur automatic buying from passive index-tracking funds.
Lingering Risks and Ownership Gaps
Despite the rebound, significant headwinds remain. Foreign holdings in Adani Enterprises sank to a record low in June, according to Prime Infobase, partly reflecting a broader reduction in global fund exposure to Indian equities earlier this year.
The company also suffers from thin analyst coverage, tracked by just four brokerages, which is the lowest among Indian firms valued above 4 trillion rupees. Morgan Stanley warned in its June note that long-term infrastructure projects carry inherent refinancing risks and vulnerability to regulatory changes.
Nevertheless, the conglomerate has added more than 4 trillion rupees in market value this year, helping return Gautam Adani to the top of Asia’s rich list. “Investors returning to Adani are making an active bet on legal normalization, funding access and execution,” said Maxence Visseau, chief investment officer of Arkevium Capital in Dubai. He cited the arrival of institutions like Capital Group and Qatar Holding through large block trades as early validation of this thesis.
