Sony's Spider-Man Shatters Preview Record, Eyes $330M Opening

Sony Pictures is poised for a massive revenue windfall as its latest Spider-Man installment crushes industry forecasts and sets a new preview record, signaling robust consumer demand for theatrical releases.

Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day is tracking for a staggering $330 million domestic opening weekend, vastly outperforming pre-release industry forecasts that ranged from $180 million to $250 million. The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, generated $72 million from Wednesday Amazon screenings and Thursday previews alone.

That preview haul eclipses the $60 million benchmark set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019, signaling unprecedented consumer demand. Friday alone is projected to gross between $167 million and $173 million across 4,487 North American theaters. Given this early momentum, the film remains a legitimate threat to Endgame’s all-time domestic opening record of $357.1 million.

For Sony’s balance sheet, the sheer scale of this opening weekend provides a substantial and immediate revenue uplift. It also serves as a leading indicator for the film’s total lifetime value. The previous installment, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, opened to $260.1 million domestically—including $50 million in previews—before ultimately securing $814.8 million domestically and $1.1 billion internationally. With Brand New Day already outpacing that early trajectory outside of a pandemic-affected environment, investors can anticipate a comparable, multi-billion-dollar global run.

The success of the release validates the premium pricing strategies increasingly deployed by studios and theater chains. The integration of Amazon’s special screenings into the preview window demonstrates how partnerships with tech distributors can extract higher ticket yields from major franchise releases. This dynamic reinforces the broader market thesis that while mid-budget films struggle in theaters, top-tier intellectual property continues to command massive consumer spending.

The arrival of Spider-Man has concluded the two-week domestic dominance of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, pushing the epic to the second spot. However, the Nolan film’s performance further underscores the current vitality of the theatrical market. Starring Holland, Zendaya, Matt Damon, and Anne Hathaway, The Odyssey is projected to add $52 million in its third weekend. That performance will lift its domestic cumulative gross to an impressive $396.5 million. Having two films simultaneously generating upwards of $50 million in a single weekend reflects a robust environment for exhibition economics and studio pipeline monetization.
