XOCEAN starts cable route survey for 1.8GW Bellrock wind farm

XOCEAN is launching a seabed survey for Nadara’s 1.8 GW Bellrock floating wind project, advancing the grid infrastructure needed ahead of an expected 2031 construction start.

A geophysical survey of the proposed Bellrock floating offshore wind farm's export cable corridor is set to begin this month. XOCEAN will conduct the work to map the seabed route required to bring the project's generated electricity onshore.

A Notice to Mariners indicates the campaign will launch no earlier than July 26. Crews expect to finish the work in about 60 days, though the operational window extends to November 30 to accommodate weather and other constraints.

XOCEAN will deploy one geophysical survey vessel, one support ship, and as many as four uncrewed surface vessels for the campaign. These vessels will rely on both hull-mounted and towed equipment to gather seabed data.

Developer Nadara plans to build the facility roughly 120 kilometres east of Stonehaven, Scotland. The site will hold up to 132 floating turbines to achieve a total generation capacity of 1.8 GW.

Bellrock Offshore Wind Farm Limited, a project company wholly owned by Nadara, filed Section 36 Consent and Marine Licence applications with Scottish Ministers earlier this year. Securing these approvals remains the primary hurdle before the site can advance.

An approval would trigger the transition into detailed design and broader supply chain engagement. Construction is currently anticipated to start in 2031.

For the energy supply chain, a 1.8 GW floating wind project represents a significant potential source of future contracts. The initiation of the XOCEAN survey provides a tangible signal of developer spending and project momentum. Market participants will now look toward the Scottish government's licensing decision as the next critical milestone for this major infrastructure investment. The 2031 construction target means the project will feature prominently in long-term supply chain planning for the region's energy transition.
