Ecuador Oil Sale to Peru Tops US$1.6 Billion

Petroecuador awarded Petroperú two contracts for 16.2 million barrels of Oriente crude worth an estimated US$1.652 billion, reviving trade after four years. The post Ecuador Oil Sale to Peru Tops US$1.6 Billion appeared first on The Rio Times .

The Ecuador oil sale to Peru is worth an estimated US$1.652 billion, Ecuador’s state oil company Petroecuador said on Tuesday 20 October 2026. It awarded two contracts on Wednesday 14 October to Peru’s state-owned Petroperú for 16.2 million barrels of Oriente crude.

For US readers the deal shows what oil near US$100 a barrel does to government income in the Andes, with the US WTI benchmark as the price basis for the estimate. The US Energy Information Administration put WTI spot at US$101.91 a barrel on 14 October, the day Petroecuador says the awards were made.

The announcement came while President Daniel Noboa was in Lima, where he met Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori for a presidential meeting and the 17th binational cabinet session between the two countries. Petroecuador and Petroperú also signed a four-year memorandum of understanding on energy cooperation and integration.

The crude is Oriente, a semi-heavy grade that Primicias says makes up about 60% of Ecuador’s oil exports, with the heavier Napo grade making up the other 40%. Petroecuador produced 363,561 barrels a day from January to September 2026, up 6.31% on the same period of 2025, and Primicias says it accounts for almost 80% of national output.

By our own calculation, assuming even deliveries, the two contracts add up to roughly 59,000 barrels a day during the first six months, about 16% of that Petroecuador output. That is an illustration of scale and not a delivery schedule, which the two companies have not published.

El Universo and Primicias both say the US$1.652 billion is an estimate based on current prices of the WTI benchmark, so it is not a fixed contract price. Divided by 16.2 million barrels, it implies about US$101.98 a barrel, which is our arithmetic.

US Energy Information Administration data put WTI spot at US$98.73 on Monday 12 October and US$101.91 on Wednesday 14 October. Primicias gives US$101.79 for 20 October and links the climb in world prices to the war between Iran and the United States that began in March 2026.

The sources do not publish the contract price formula, and Extra notes that Ecuadorian crude sells below WTI, at US$87.80 on 15 October by Petroecuador’s latest data. Final income could therefore differ from the estimate if prices move or if the formula uses a discount or premium to WTI.

The crude is meant for the Talara refinery in the northern Peruvian region of Piura, and Petroecuador says the contracts make it the refinery’s main crude supplier. Primicias adds that the two contracts would cover about 60% of Talara’s crude, a figure the other outlets reviewed do not repeat.

Petroperú is Peru’s state-owned oil company, which transports, refines and sells fuels. The two state companies had no commercial relationship for four years before this award.

On 23 September Petroecuador manager Sebastián Maag said the company was looking for international partners to refine part of its crude abroad and receive fuels in exchange, with Peru as one possibility. The new contracts are crude sales, and Petroecuador says they open the door to cooperation on crude and derivatives supply, logistics and storage, and maritime transport.

El Universo says EP Flopec, Ecuador’s state shipping company, provides specialised services to move the oil. The sources reviewed do not say which ports or vessels will carry the cargoes.

A fire at the Baeza pumping station shut Ecuador’s main crude pipeline, the SOTE, in early October, as we covered in Ecuador Pipeline Fire Shuts Main Oil Line . Petroecuador lifted its force majeure notice on Friday 9 October, and El Universo says transport capacity returned to its regular 312,000 barrels a day.

The SOTE carries Amazon crude to the marine terminals in Esmeraldas on the Pacific coast. The sources do not say whether the cargoes for Peru will load there.

US investors and energy traders get a fresh data point on how oil near US$100 a barrel is turning into state income and new supply ties in the Andes. The WTI benchmark behind the estimate is the same US price that US fuel buyers follow.

Travellers and expats see no direct change, because the contracts cover crude shipped between two state companies. Our guides Ecuador and Its Neighbours in the Andes and Peru Neighbours Explained, the Andean Power Balance show how the two countries relate, and our Quito expat city guide covers daily life in the Ecuadorian capital.

The contract price formula, the delivery start date and the loading ports have not been published in the sources reviewed. The US$1.652 billion is an estimate at current WTI prices, so final income will depend on the prices that apply.

Primicias alone gives the 60% share of Talara’s crude, while the other outlets only call Petroecuador the main supplier. Petroperú’s own statement, as reported by Extra, covers the four-year memorandum and does not mention the contracts, the 16.2 million barrels or the US$1.652 billion.

It is also not known whether the options for extra volumes will be used, how Petroperú will pay, or whether the memorandum carries binding terms. We could not open the original Petroecuador and Petroperú statements, so the details rest on reports by El Universo, Primicias, RPP, Gestión, La República EC and Extra.

Ecuador will sell about 16.2 million barrels of Oriente crude to Petroperú under two contracts. One covers about 4.32 million barrels over six months and the other about 11.88 million barrels over 11 months.

Petroecuador estimates income of US$1.652 billion at current WTI prices. That equals about US$101.98 a barrel by our arithmetic, and the final amount depends on price terms that are not public.

Petroperú, Peru’s state-owned oil company, will receive the crude for its Talara refinery in Piura. Petroecuador says this makes it the refinery’s main crude supplier.

Petroecuador announced the awards on Tuesday 20 October 2026 and said they were made on Wednesday 14 October. The announcement coincided with President Daniel Noboa’s visit to Lima.

It shows how oil near US$100 a barrel feeds state income and new trade ties in the Andes, with the US WTI benchmark as the basis for the estimate. Travellers see no direct change.
