Polymarket Introduces Leveraged Perpetual Futures to Retail Traders

Prediction market platform Polymarket has launched perpetual futures with up to 20x leverage, exposing its predominantly small-balance retail user base to amplified market risks.

Polymarket launched a perpetual futures product on September 3, initially offering 10 markets before rapidly expanding to 67 within hours. The new contracts provide leveraged exposure to a broad range of assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, the S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, gold, silver, oil, and individual stocks.

Unlike traditional futures, these perpetual contracts carry no expiration date, allowing traders to maintain long or short positions indefinitely. Instead of rolling contracts, price alignment with the underlying asset is maintained through a funding-rate mechanism. This system mandates periodic payments between long and short positions to keep the perpetual price anchored to the spot market.

The platform is offering up to 20x leverage on certain contracts, although the maximum leverage varies depending on the specific asset. At the highest level of leverage, an adverse price movement of just 5 percent is sufficient to completely eliminate a trader’s entire margin.

Retail Exposure and Hidden Costs

This risk profile is particularly acute given Polymarket’s established user demographics. The platform reports a median trade size of $10, with 80 percent of its users holding account balances under $500. Consequently, this retail base now controls notional positions that are vastly larger than their actual cash deposits.

Furthermore, funding costs on these perpetual contracts are charged against the full notional exposure. This structure ensures that a small deposit carries significantly more financial risk than its nominal dollar amount suggests, as holding costs compound against the leveraged total rather than the initial margin.

Broader Market Implications

This strategic pivot integrates a retail-heavy prediction platform into the massive perpetual futures ecosystem. Global trading volume for these instruments exceeded $90 trillion in 2025, according to estimates cited by Kalshi and reported by Reuters.

For market professionals and regulators, the proliferation of high-leverage derivative products among undercapitalized retail traders presents a distinct vulnerability. A highly volatile market session could trigger rapid, cascading liquidations across these 67 markets, potentially amplifying localized price dislocations in the underlying assets.
