Manchester City break Premier League spending record with £125m Fernandez acquisition
Manchester City have set a new Premier League single-window spending record of £458 million, highlighted by a £125 million acquisition of Enzo Fernandez that underscores the growing financial scale and asset appreciation in elite European football.
Manchester City completed the £125 million signing of midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea on Tuesday, concluding negotiations that spanned 24 hours. The deal establishes a joint-British transfer record and pushes the club’s total expenditure to an unprecedented £458 million in a single transfer window.
This gross spending figure surpasses the previous Premier League record of £415 million set by Liverpool last summer. However, City’s financial strategy remains balanced, as the club has generated approximately £300 million from player sales during the same period, significantly offsetting the record outlay.
The transaction represents a rare case of asset appreciation in professional football, despite earlier links to Real Madrid. Chelsea originally acquired the 25-year-old Argentina international from Benfica in 2023 for a then-record £107 million. Selling the player for £125 million just over three years later allows Chelsea to recoup their initial investment and realize a capital gain.
Fernandez’s move highlights accelerating inflation in the Premier League player market. He becomes the fourth player to command a fee of at least £100 million this summer, joining Chelsea’s £117 million signing of Morgan Rogers, Liverpool’s £123 million acquisition of Bradley Barcola, and City’s own £116 million purchase of Elliot Anderson in July.
Chelsea had initially set a deadline of 17:00 BST on August 14 for offers of at least £120 million to resolve uncertainty before the new season. Manager Enzo Maresca pushed for the move after City lost several midfielders, reuniting with the player he previously managed at Stamford Bridge. The exit follows reports in Argentina that Fernandez asked to be excluded from recent matches, including a 4-3 victory over Brighton, after being booed by supporters against Real Sociedad and Fulham.
Addressing his departure, Fernandez published an open letter acknowledging the difficulty of the decision. He stated that from the moment he arrived at Chelsea, he became "obsessed with winning and with bringing this club every trophy that its history deserves." Now at City, he told the club’s website he is "ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies," framing the move as a step toward sustained competitive success.
