Indian Equities Dip as Fed Rate Hike Expectations Shift Focus to Jackson Hole

Indian benchmark indices retreated amid cautious global sentiment, prompting analysts to advise selective stock positioning ahead of pivotal US Federal Reserve commentary.

Indian benchmark indices closed lower on Thursday, weighed down by heavyweight losses and mixed global signals. The Nifty slipped 0.48 percent to 24,090.85, while the Sensex dropped 0.70 percent to 76,933.59 on monthly expiry day.

Market participants are exercising caution as firmer US inflation data keeps Federal Reserve rate-hike expectations alive. Attention is now fixed on Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s upcoming remarks at the Jackson Hole symposium for directional clarity.

Ajit Mishra, senior vice president of research at Religare Broking, noted that the Nifty is compressing into a tight consolidation band, signaling a volatility squeeze. A decisive breakout from this range will likely dictate the near-term market trend.

The index is currently testing a crucial support zone between 24,000 and 24,100. Mishra warned that a sustained breach below this level could trigger a deeper correction toward 23,650 to 23,800, while immediate resistance sits at 24,200.

Amid broader market caution, Mishra identified specific technical opportunities for investors. CG Power recently found support at its 200-day exponential moving average after retreating from ₹980 highs, breaking above a declining trendline to suggest renewed upward momentum.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders also displays a constructive bullish structure following an extended consolidation phase. The stock is holding above key moving averages with improving volume and positive momentum indicators, making it a candidate for accumulation.

Conversely, the fast-moving consumer goods sector continues to struggle with persistent underperformance. Hindustan Unilever has formed a pattern of lower highs and lower lows, recently slipping below its support zone to create a shorting pivot.

Mishra advised market participants to maintain disciplined risk management and a stock-specific approach until greater macroeconomic clarity emerges. Futures strategies may be warranted for underperforming assets facing continued selling pressure.
