Indian Markets Set for Negative Open Amid Fed Uncertainty and Oil Declines

Indian benchmark indices are poised for a negative opening as investors weigh domestic sectoral weakness against global cues ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s pivotal Jackson Hole address.

Indian stock market benchmark indices are projected to open lower on Friday, August 28, following a negative close on Thursday. The Sensex declined 539 points, or 0.70%, to 76,933.59, while the Nifty 50 fell 117 points, or 0.48%, to 24,090.85.

Domestic headwinds are currently outweighing supportive global signals, according to market executives. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that broad-based selling across financial stocks, PSU banks, FMCG, services, and IT offset relief from softer crude oil prices.

HDFC Bank emerged as a notable drag on sentiment following reports of a U.S. class-action lawsuit. This localized pressure highlights how individual corporate vulnerabilities can amplify broader market caution among institutional investors.

Market participants remain heavily focused on Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s upcoming speech at the Jackson Hole symposium. Traders are currently pricing in a 64% probability that the central bank will keep interest rates unchanged at its next meeting, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

Regional equity markets reflected this cautious bias in early Friday trading. South Korea’s Kospi fell 1.04% and Hang Seng futures declined 0.5%, though Japanese stocks bucked the trend with the Nikkei 225 gaining 0.66% and the Topix rising 1.04%.

In the United States, stock futures were largely flat overnight. S&P 500 futures edged down 0.1% and Nasdaq 100 futures declined 0.2%, following Thursday’s strong Wall Street performance driven by a nearly 9% surge in Nvidia shares after its earnings report.

Commodity markets also showed subdued momentum as geopolitical tensions persist. Brent crude futures fell 0.3% to $89.45 a barrel, setting up a 5.3% weekly decline, while West Texas Intermediate slipped 0.3% to $83.31.

The oil retreat comes despite ongoing diplomatic friction, with the U.S. recently imposing stringent sanctions on Iran and signaling no interest in reviving previous diplomatic agreements. Consequently, safe-haven assets remained muted, with spot gold slipping 0.2% to $4,589.85 per ounce as traders await further macroeconomic clarity.
