Indian equities retreat as banking weakness and foreign outflows weigh

Broad-based selling dragged Indian benchmarks lower on Thursday despite a positive global open, signaling fragile near-term sentiment as persistent foreign fund outflows and banking sector headwinds override favorable crude prices.

Indian benchmarks closed lower on Thursday, erasing early gains triggered by strong US technology earnings. The Nifty 50 fell 0.48% to 24,090.85, while the Sensex dropped 0.70% to 76,933.59. Market breadth remained distinctly weak, with 2,160 stocks declining against 1,341 advancers, highlighting a broad-based pullback beyond the headline indices.

The session’s reversal underscored the dominance of domestic headwinds over external tailwinds. Easing crude prices, supported by Iran-Oman talks regarding the Strait of Hormuz, failed to counteract persistent foreign-fund outflows and uncertainty over gold import duties. HDFC Bank emerged as a primary drag on the financial sector following the revelation of a US lawsuit, pulling down broader banking indices.

Metals led sectoral losses, falling more than 1%, alongside declines in oil and gas, auto, and PSU banks. Conversely, defensive pockets like healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and consumer durables posted modest gains. Technically, the Nifty 50 has breached its 50-day moving average, indicating a loss of short-term momentum, though it holds above a critical rising trendline from April lows.

The Nifty Bank index also closed at its intraday low, dropping 0.47% to 57,509.95 and slipping below its 21-day and 50-day simple moving averages. This clustering of key averages marks a crucial inflection zone for the sector. Despite near-term technical deterioration, the medium-term banking outlook remains supported by the RBI’s unchanged 5.25% repo rate and a 6.7% growth projection for the 2027 fiscal year.

Amid the broader caution, equity analysts are highlighting specific structural opportunities. Kalyan Jewellers was recommended for its capital-light franchise expansion and the ongoing formalization of the organized retail sector. The stock, trading at ₹631, carries a target of ₹730, though analysts warn that gold price volatility and an elevated price-to-earnings multiple of 43.10 pose significant risks.

Bharat Heavy Electricals also received a buy recommendation, supported by a historic ₹2.4 trillion order backlog that capitalizes on India's power and railway capital expenditure cycle. Trading at ₹434, the stock targets ₹495, driven by a thermal power resurgence. However, investors are cautioned about working capital stress and execution delays inherent in complex infrastructure projects.
