Behari Lal Engineering debuts on Indian bourses with 41 percent listing premium

The iron and steel manufacturer begins trading in Mumbai today with a substantial grey market premium, highlighting investor appetite for industrial capacity expansions and green transitions.

Behari Lal Engineering commenced trading on the BSE and NSE today, 19 August, following the finalization of its share allotment earlier this week. The industrial manufacturer is entering the public markets with a strong grey market premium, signaling robust initial investor appetite.

Unlisted market trackers indicate the shares are commanding a premium of ₹118, pointing to an estimated listing price of ₹403. This represents a 41.40 percent jump from the upper end of the ₹271 to ₹285 IPO price band. The debut underscores continued investor interest in India's core industrial sector as manufacturers seek capital to fund capacity upgrades.

Harshal Dasani, Business Head at INVasset PMS, observed that the manufacturer enters the market with a constructive setup. He warned that while grey market enthusiasm supports initial sentiment, sustaining the premium requires the new capacity to effectively translate into revenue and cash flows.

Mahesh M Ojha of Kantilal Chhaganlal Securities recommended that existing allottees book partial listing gains and hold the rest for the medium to long term. He advised fresh investors to wait for price stability, highlighting the risk of initial post-IPO volatility.

Ojha also pointed out that a growing share of higher-value products and capacity expansion should improve operating leverage and product mix. This structural shift could support sustainable margin expansion over the medium term, provided execution meets expectations.

The ₹302-crore public issue included a ₹93-crore fresh share issuance and an offer-for-sale of 73.20 lakh equity shares worth nearly ₹209 crore. The subscription window ran from 12 August to 17 August, with the allotment finalized on Monday.

Prior to the public offering, the company secured ₹90.48 crore from anchor investors by allocating 31.75 lakh shares at the top price of ₹285. The anchor book included prominent names such as Tata AIA Life Insurance Company, PineBridge Global Funds, WhiteOak Capital, and Bandhan Mutual Fund.

Proceeds from the fresh issue will fund equipment installation and civil work at existing manufacturing facilities. The company also plans to deploy capital toward rooftop solar systems at two units, debt reduction, and general corporate requirements.

Founded in 1995, Behari Lal Engineering manufactures precision-engineered iron and steel products like metal rolls, alloy steel products, and forged shafts for critical industrial applications. Emkay Global Financial Services acted as the book-running lead manager, while MUFG Intime India served as the registrar.
