Indian Stocks Fall for Fifth Day as Oil Surge and IT Weakness Weigh on Markets

Indian equity benchmarks fell for a fifth consecutive session as rising crude prices and technology sector weakness pushed the Nifty 50 below critical short-term support, signaling heightened caution among investors.

Indian equity benchmarks extended their losing streak to a fifth consecutive session on Monday, driven by a fresh surge in crude oil prices and persistent weakness in the technology sector. The Nifty 50 dropped 78.35 points, or 0.32 percent, to close at 24,287.65, while the Sensex declined 281.09 points, or 0.36 percent, to settle at 77,728.16.

Information technology emerged as the primary drag on the broader market, with major players including Infosys, HCL Technologies, TCS, and Tech Mahindra each shedding more than 1 percent. PSU banks, FMCG, and financial services stocks also faced selling pressure as renewed uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the unresolved U.S.-Iran standoff lifted oil prices. This geopolitical tension has simultaneously weakened the rupee and dampened overall risk appetite, overshadowing mixed global cues.

Despite the broader selloff, auto, metal, pharma, and healthcare stocks provided marginal support, led by gains in Hindalco, Titan, Bajaj Finance, and HDFC Life Insurance. However, market breadth remained decisively negative, with 1,825 stocks declining against 1,683 advancing on the National Stock Exchange. This underscores the widespread nature of the selling pressure across midcap and smallcap segments.

Technical Indicators Flash Caution

The Nifty 50 has now slipped below its short-term 21-day moving average at 24,322, indicating a distinct loss of near-term momentum. Momentum indicators reflect this softening, with the Relative Strength Index dropping to 49.26 and the MACD histogram moving into negative territory, signaling a bearish crossover.

Market technicians are now watching the 24,300 to 24,250 zone as immediate support. A decisive breach below this band could intensify selling pressure and drag the index toward 24,000, which aligns with the 50-day moving average, while upside resistance remains firmly established between 24,675 and 24,770.

Banking Sector Consolidates

The Nifty Bank index displayed fragile stability, closing nearly unchanged with a marginal gain of 6.70 points, or 0.01 percent, at 57,497.80. The index is currently consolidating around a tight cluster of moving averages, including the 21-day, 50-day, and 200-day simple moving averages, reflecting deep market indecision.

Momentum in the banking sector remains neutral, with the RSI hovering at 50.06 and the MACD flattening near the equilibrium zone. A sustained breakout above the 58,000 resistance level is required to restore bullish momentum, whereas a drop below 57,100 could trigger renewed downside pressure.

Amid the broader consolidation, research platforms are highlighting selective opportunities, such as Raymond Limited and digital investment platform Billionbrains Garage Ventures. Analysts note that while both present specific growth narratives, they carry distinct valuation, execution, and regulatory risks that require careful navigation in the current volatile environment.
