Home Depot CEO Decker on medical leave; Campbell, McPhail to lead

Home Depot's CEO is taking a temporary medical leave just days before quarterly earnings, handing operational and financial control to two deeply tenured executives to reassure investors.

Home Depot CEO Ted Decker is stepping back for a temporary medical leave of absence lasting several months. The retailer announced on Wednesday that it has divided his responsibilities between two veteran deputies, a transition designed to maintain stability just one week ahead of its fiscal second-quarter earnings report on Tuesday.

Ann-Marie Campbell, senior executive vice president of U.S. stores and operations, will manage day-to-day operations. Richard McPhail, chief financial officer, will assume control of financial management and the company's Pro business. Lead independent director Greg Brenneman will step in as chair of the board during this period.

For investors, the immediate risk with any sudden executive absence is operational disruption. Home Depot has moved to neutralize this by leaning on internal candidates with decades of combined experience. Campbell, 61, has been with the company since 1985, rising from a cashier to run U.S. store operations. McPhail, 56, joined in 2005 and has served as CFO since September 2019.

McPhail's expanded purview over the Pro segment ensures continuity for a critical revenue stream. His dual focus on finance and the professional contractor channel will be closely watched by analysts when the company reports earnings. The board stated that these appointments were made in alignment with Decker's recommendation.

A securities filing confirmed neither Campbell nor McPhail will receive additional compensation for their expanded duties. This reinforces the narrative of a unified leadership team managing a standard transition rather than a crisis. The company did not disclose the nature of Decker's condition, leaving the market to focus on Tuesday's earnings for tangible signs of operational steadiness.
