Apple earnings beat overshadowed by weak guidance, chip supply fears

Apple posted record fiscal third-quarter revenue but its shares fell as cautious guidance and chip supply constraints overshadowed robust iPhone demand.

Apple delivered its strongest June quarter on record, with fiscal third-quarter revenue rising 16.4% year-on-year to $109.4 billion and earnings per share reaching $2.02. Both figures comfortably cleared Wall Street estimates. Yet, the technology giant's shares dropped in after-hours trading as investors looked past the historical beat.

The quarterly upside was primarily driven by robust demand for the company's flagship hardware. iPhone revenue surged 21.7% to $54.25 billion, exceeding analyst expectations as premium models continued to attract buyers. Mac sales also provided a significant lift, climbing 28.7% on the back of healthy spending from both consumers and enterprise clients.

However, the underlying results revealed notable pockets of weakness across the product portfolio. iPad sales declined during the period, highlighting an uneven performance among Apple's hardware lines. Additionally, revenue from Greater China climbed more than 22%, but this figure still disappointed investors who had priced in a stronger rebound for the crucial market.

The services segment, typically a reliable margin driver, also underwhelmed. Revenue for the division grew 12.1%, but the increase fell short of consensus estimates. The relative softness in this high-margin business added to the cautious tone surrounding the report.

The immediate catalyst for the after-hours selloff was management's forward-looking guidance. Apple projected current-quarter revenue growth of 9% to 11%, trailing the roughly 12% expansion that analysts had anticipated. Crucially, executives warned that supply constraints for advanced chips could act as a bottleneck, raising fresh concerns about the company's production capacity.

For market professionals, the reaction underscores a shift in how Apple is being valued. The focus is moving beyond current execution to future scalability, particularly in artificial intelligence. Investors are closely watching the company's AI strategy, including upcoming Siri enhancements, as competition among major technology firms intensifies.

Going forward, Apple's ability to clear supply chain hurdles will be just as important as its hardware sales. The market is signaling that sustaining double-digit growth and protecting margins will require not just premium pricing, but successfully navigating complex semiconductor supply dynamics.
