Standard Chartered posts record profit, $1bn buyback

Standard Chartered beat analyst estimates with a record first-half profit driven by wealth management, announcing a $1 billion share buyback despite taking a hit from Middle East impairments.

Standard Chartered posted a record first-half net profit of $3.37 billion, surpassing analyst expectations and rewarding shareholders with a new $1 billion buy-back programme. The London-headquartered lender’s 10 per cent profit increase for the first six months of 2026 outpaced the consensus estimate of $3.01 billion, driven by a 17 per cent jump in earnings per share.

The earnings beat was primarily powered by the bank's wealth management division, which offset headwinds elsewhere. However, these robust gains were partially countered by a notable impairment charge linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict and broader bad debt costs. Pre-tax profit for the period rose 9 per cent to $4.78 billion, up from $4.38 billion a year earlier.

The immediate launch of the $1 billion share repurchase provides a tangible return to equity holders and signals robust capital generation. Chief Executive Bill Winters highlighted an upgraded income guidance alongside the buy-back as proof of management's confidence in the trajectory of the business. "We delivered a 17 per cent increase in our earnings per share, and our upgraded income guidance and new share buy-back of $1 billion reflected our confidence in the business," Winters said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

The results validate the lender's focus on higher-margin fee businesses, which helped absorb the credit risks associated with its lending portfolio. Winters attributed the overall performance directly to the bank's cross-border capabilities. "Our performance demonstrates the strength of our differentiated international network and the disciplined execution of our strategy. Clients continue to turn to us to facilitate trade, investment and wealth flows across the world’s most dynamic markets," he stated.

For market participants, the results present a structurally positive picture despite macroeconomic headwinds. While the Middle East-driven impairment serves as a clear reminder of the geopolitical risks tied to the bank's international operations, the upgraded guidance and aggressive capital return suggest the underlying franchise is generating sufficient cash to absorb localized shocks. Net profit climbed to 151.6 US cents per share, cementing the half-year as a record for the bank.
