Uniswap v4 fees are additive, not dilutive, Adams says

Uniswap's founder pushed back against claims that newly activated v4 protocol fees dilute liquidity provider returns, a crucial clarification for capital deployed in the world's largest decentralized exchange.

Uniswap founder Hayden Adams pushed back against claims that newly activated v4 protocol fees reduce liquidity provider earnings, labeling the criticism "FUD and misunderstanding."

The intervention follows a Uniswap governance vote to activate protocol fees for selected v4 pools across multiple blockchains. The proposal drew swift pushback from some market participants, who argued the mechanism would slash LP profitability by seizing a quarter of their proceeds. In a post on X on Tuesday, Adams explicitly rejected the assertion that the protocol was taking 25% of LP profits.

To illustrate the discrepancy, Adams pointed to the mechanics of a standard 30-basis-point pool. In this scenario, a 5-basis-point protocol fee represents roughly 14% of total swap fees generated. He stressed that these fees are additive rather than deducted from existing LP allocations, meaning providers keep their established take rate.

This structural distinction is highly significant for capital allocation within decentralized finance. Uniswap currently secures about $3.06 billion in total value locked, making it the world’s largest decentralized exchange by that metric, according to DefiLlama. Yield is the primary driver for the capital parked in these pools.

If the market had accepted the narrative of a 25% yield reduction, a sudden migration of liquidity to competing venues would have been a likely consequence. By clarifying the math, Adams is working to reassure the liquidity providers that form the backbone of Uniswap's trading infrastructure. The rollout across multiple blockchains amplifies the potential revenue impact, making the exact fee structure a priority for token holders.

The activation of these v4 fees represents a broader shift in the protocol's economic model and its path to profitability. It transitions the exchange toward generating sustainable native revenue without directly cannibalizing the fee returns that attract liquidity in the first place.
