Microsoft earnings face scrutiny over $190bn AI spend
Microsoft is set to report fiscal fourth-quarter earnings on July 29, an event that will test whether its massive $190 billion AI investment can reverse a recent 20% stock decline.
Microsoft will release its fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter results after the market closes on Wednesday, July 29. CEO Satya Nadella and the company's senior management team will subsequently host a live conference call with Wall Street analysts to discuss the financials. The report arrives at a critical juncture for the technology giant.
The company's stock has lost nearly a fifth of its value recently, a significant drawdown for an equity typically viewed as one of the safest plays in the broader market. This sell-off stems directly from investor anxiety regarding the company's aggressive financial commitment to artificial intelligence. Specifically, the market is grappling with Microsoft's guidance for $190 billion in capital expenditures for calendar year 2026, which is largely earmarked for AI infrastructure.
The apprehension extends beyond the sheer scale of the spending to the actual traction of Microsoft's AI products. The company's Copilot digital assistant currently boasts roughly 20 million paid enterprise seats. While substantial in absolute terms, that figure pales in comparison to the company's installed base of more than 450 million Microsoft 365 subscribers.
Furthermore, investors are weighing the threat of disruption. There is a lingering fear that new, AI-made alternatives could eventually erode the market position of Microsoft 365, the software suite that currently powers the global business world. Management will need to address these competitive threats directly on the upcoming call.
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Wood expects the earnings release to serve as a catalyst that proves the viability of Microsoft's AI strategy. He projects that Azure, the company's cloud computing arm, will demonstrate accelerating growth over the next several quarters as AI demand materializes. Wood also anticipates that Copilot adoption will begin to pick up meaningful steam.
Should Azure expansion and Copilot integration successfully drive renewed growth within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, Wood sees tremendous upside for the shares. He has set a bull-case price target of $795 for the stock. Achieving that valuation would imply a gain of more than double from current trading levels.
However, traders remain cautious about positioning too aggressively around a near-term earnings event. Other large AI-focused companies that have reported elevated capital expenditure guidance have experienced significant stock sell-offs. Microsoft carries the concrete risk that management will guide for higher-than-expected spending for the upcoming quarter or raise its full-year 2026 projections.
