Gandhar Oil Q1 profit surge lifts specialty oil peers
Gandhar Oil Refinery's 500% jump in quarterly EBITDA triggered a 20% stock rally and lifted sector peers, signaling strong demand for specialty oils despite macroeconomic headwinds.
Gandhar Oil Refinery shares surged 20% to hit the upper circuit limit after the company reported a more than fivefold increase in first-quarter EBITDA. The dramatic earnings beat immediately spilled over to sector peers, with Savita Oil and Panama Petro rallying sharply. This cross-company movement suggests the market is interpreting the results as evidence of a broad-based upcycle in the specialty oils sector.
Top-line performance for the quarter was robust, with revenue from operations nearly doubling to Rs 1,732 crore, up 92% from Rs 903 crore in the same period last year. The true story, however, lies in the operational efficiency. EBITDA soared over 500% to Rs 281 crore, compared to Rs 46 crore previously. Earnings per share surged 633% to Rs 19.65 from Rs 2.68.
The stark gap between the 92% revenue expansion and the 500% EBITDA growth signals exceptional operating leverage. For market professionals, this margin dilation indicates that Gandhar Oil successfully shifted its revenue base toward higher-yielding products rather than simply riding a wave of higher volumes or crude price pass-throughs.
The primary drivers of this margin expansion were the highly specialized PHPO and PIO segments. PHPO growth was fueled by sustained demand from the personal care, healthcare, and pharmaceutical industries. Meanwhile, the PIO business saw increased traction from transformer, power, and rubber manufacturers. The lubricants segment delivered steady performance, rounding out a diversified product portfolio.
Achieving these margins in a volatile macro environment is notable. The operating environment featured "geopolitical developments in West Asia, crude oil price volatility and periodic supply chain disruptions," according to management. The company countered these headwinds through "agile sourcing, prudent inventory management and a favourable product mix."
Beyond domestic strength, the company credited an expanding export presence and deeper engagement with marquee customers for sustaining business momentum. Looking ahead, management sees the underlying demand environment as encouraging. The company expressed confidence in "sustaining profitable growth and creating long term value for stakeholders," a sentiment clearly echoed by investors in both Gandhar Oil and its immediate industry rivals.
