Nigeria's Mutual Benefits settles N3.9bn in June claims

Mutual Benefits Assurance paid out N3.9 billion in claims in June, a liquidity signal aimed at building trust in Nigeria's under-penetrated insurance market.

Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc settled over N3.9 billion in claims across its Life and General Insurance divisions in June 2026. The disbursements were made to individuals, families, and businesses nationwide.

For market participants, a large single-month claims outflow acts as a direct indicator of an insurer's actual liquidity and balance sheet capacity. In the Nigerian insurance sector, where overall penetration remains low, the ability to pay is the primary metric of corporate credibility. Mutual Benefits noted that consistently honouring valid claims is central to reinforcing confidence in insurance as a dependable financial protection tool, which in turn supports the broader growth and sustainability of the domestic market.

Joseph Oladokun, executive director, Technical, explicitly linked the June figures to the firm's underlying financial health. “The payment of over N3.9 billion in claims in June reflects not only our financial capacity but also our commitment to delivering a swift turnaround time that enables our customers to recover quickly from unexpected losses,” Oladokun said.

The company is leveraging these settlements to combat the consumer scepticism that historically restricts policy uptake in emerging economies. By processing claims across motor and general accident lines, including Goods in Transit policies, the insurer is attempting to demonstrate operational reliability to commercial clients. One business policyholder whose Goods in Transit claim was recently resolved noted: “The process was smooth, transparent and handled with a high level of professionalism. Thank you, Mutual Benefits, for standing by your promise and settling my claim without unnecessary delays.”

A separate retail client with a motor claim offered a similar assessment: ‘Thank you for your excellent services and very quick response to claims’.

Oladokun indicated that the firm is actively refining its internal claims management protocols to maintain this turnaround speed. “At Mutual Benefits, we understand that the true value of insurance is demonstrated at the point of claim. This is why we have continued to strengthen our claims management processes to ensure valid claims are assessed and settled promptly, transparently and professionally,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Mutual Benefits said it plans to use its settlement record as a foundation to deepen insurance penetration across Nigeria. The firm remains focused on deploying innovative insurance solutions alongside its claims infrastructure to give individuals and businesses the confidence to protect their assets.
