Teledyne posts record Q2, lifts 2026 outlook on $5B backlog
Teledyne Technologies raised its full-year guidance after a record second quarter driven by robust defense demand and a $5 billion backlog, signaling sustained earnings momentum.
Teledyne Technologies reported record second-quarter results, prompting the industrial conglomerate to raise its full-year 2026 revenue and earnings forecasts. Quarterly sales increased 9.8% year over year, while non-GAAP earnings surged 20.8%. Executive Chairman Robert Mehrabian characterized the period as delivering the strongest quarterly orders, sales, and operating profit in the company's history.
The company ended June with approximately $5 billion in funded backlog after orders outpaced sales for the 11th consecutive quarter. "Our second quarter performance reflected strong execution of the backlog we've been building for almost three years," Mehrabian said. He attributed the expansion to the breadth of the company's portfolio, including sensors and vertically integrated platforms "from space to deep sea."
Digital Imaging led the quarterly performance, with segment sales climbing 12.7% and margins expanding to 25%. Demand also accelerated in key defense-adjacent markets, particularly unmanned systems, space, and missiles. Teledyne noted that it anticipates stronger organic growth across both its commercial and defense businesses for the remainder of the year.
Management lifted its full-year revenue outlook by $120 million compared to its April projection, now targeting just under 7% growth to exceed $6.53 billion. Chief Financial Officer Steve Blackwood pointed to stronger organic growth as the driver behind a $0.55 per share increase to the non-GAAP EPS midpoint, setting a new range of $24.45 to $24.65. GAAP EPS is projected between $20.73 and $20.99.
Beyond the top-line expansion, the underlying financial health of the company improved markedly during the quarter. Cash flow generation strengthened, and leverage fell to its lowest level in six years. For investors, this deleveraging is a critical metric, as it signals that recent capital deployment is yielding returns without straining the balance sheet.
The sustained order beat streak suggests that demand for Teledyne's specialized instrumentation remains resilient. With a funded backlog approaching $5 billion and management executing on delivery timelines, the raised guidance appears well-supported. The balance of strengthening commercial markets and sticky defense contracts positions the company for reliable earnings conversion through 2026.
