Nubank CEO Vélez joins OpenAI boards in IPO prep signal
Nubank founder David Vélez has joined OpenAI’s nonprofit and for-profit boards, giving the Latin American digital bank a strategic edge in artificial intelligence while bolstering the AI company's financial governance ahead of a potential public listing.
OpenAI appointed David Vélez to its board of directors on July 21, 2026. The Nubank chief executive will hold a seat on both the nonprofit OpenAI Foundation and the for-profit OpenAI Group PBC. He joins alongside Robin Vince, who will chair the audit committee, though Vélez's specific committee role was not disclosed.
The expansion of the board comes as OpenAI prepares for a potential initial public offering. Bringing in a leader who scaled a heavily regulated financial institution across multiple countries addresses the compliance and oversight demands of public-market life. Bret Taylor, OpenAI’s board chair, said the new members will "help ensure artificial intelligence benefits everyone as the company scales."
For investors holding Nubank shares on the New York Stock Exchange, the appointment represents a long-term strategic asset. Nubank, the world’s largest digital bank by customer count with over 135 million users, already partners with OpenAI to offer ChatGPT subscriptions to its customers. Industry analysts have long expected the bank to embed generative AI into credit underwriting, fraud detection, and customer service. Vélez now has an early look at the commercial roadmap of the world’s most influential AI company, potentially allowing Nubank to deploy these tools before regional competitors.
The appointment also shifts the geography of frontier technology governance. By elevating a Latin American fintech leader, OpenAI is securing a perspective beyond Silicon Valley. Nubank’s core markets—Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia—are emerging economies where AI tools are expected to scale rapidly, yet they are frequently overlooked in global technology governance debates.
Nubank has not issued a formal statement regarding a new companywide AI strategy linked to the appointment. Vélez’s return to direct operational control in 2025 already sharpened the bank's global focus. Now, his dual role at OpenAI guarantees him influence over both the nonprofit’s mission-guarding function and the for-profit arm's commercial strategy. Market participants should monitor Nubank's investor relations for any shift from its current ChatGPT promotional partnership into deeper product integrations within the banking app.
