Bitcoin stalls near $65,900 ahead of Alphabet earnings

Bitcoin's rally has paused alongside chip stocks as investors await Alphabet's results to determine if massive AI spending is justified.

Bitcoin traded near $65,900 on Wednesday, pulling back slightly from a two-week high as a broader market rally in technology stocks lost momentum. The largest cryptocurrency is still up 1.5% for the week, but its upward trajectory has stalled in lockstep with a sudden caution sweeping through the semiconductor sector.

The immediate catalyst for this pause is Alphabet, which is scheduled to release its quarterly results after the U.S. market closes. Last quarter, the technology giant announced plans to more than double its capital expenditure, committing to spend as much as $190 billion this year. Investors are now positioning for the report, demanding concrete proof that such massive financial commitments are translating into tangible revenue growth.

This underlying skepticism has already rippled through global equity markets. Nasdaq 100 futures declined 0.8%, South Korea's Kospi index surrendered strong early gains, and technology shares lagged notably across European exchanges. The broad-based hesitation reflects mounting anxieties that the aggressive, capital-intensive pace of artificial intelligence infrastructure investment may ultimately prove unsustainable.

For cryptocurrency traders, the Alphabet report represents a critical inflection point because digital assets have become unexpectedly tethered to the AI narrative throughout this month. Bitcoin has consistently risen when the chip complex rallies and dropped when semiconductor stocks stumble. This correlation is driven partly by overlapping risk appetite among institutional managers. However, it also reflects a fundamental shift in the digital asset mining sector, where operators are aggressively repurposing their facilities into AI data centers.

Because publicly traded bitcoin miners are increasingly valued on their high-performance computing capabilities rather than their crypto mining output, positive AI developments now directly support crypto valuations. Elsewhere in the digital asset complex, major tokens traded quietly. Ether held near $1,917, recording a 2% gain over the past seven days, while the Hyperliquid token bucked the generally flat trend with a 2% weekly decline.

Market participants will quickly pivot from these corporate earnings to macroeconomic policy. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to meet on July 28 and 29, exactly six days after Alphabet provides the market with its first rigorous assessment of whether the AI build-out remains a financially viable trade.
