India SME IPOs keep raising capital despite fading debut premiums

A shift toward fundamentals is reshaping India's small-cap IPO market, as robust capital raising persists even as the proportion of companies debuting at a premium drops below 50%.

Indian small and medium enterprises raised ₹3,752 crore through 78 initial public offerings in the first half of 2026, a figure marginally below the ₹4,004 crore mobilised by 88 listings in the same period last year. According to a report by B2K Analytics, this capital preservation comes despite heightened global volatility and a sharp cooling in first-day listing premiums.

The proportion of SME IPOs delivering listing gains has fallen steadily from a peak of 87.8% in 2024 to 60.6% in 2025 and just 50% in the first half of 2026. Concurrently, listing losses increased to 33.3% in the first half of this year. Since 2020, 963 SME IPOs have listed on Indian exchanges, with 704, or 73.1%, debuting at a premium overall.

The composition of the capital raised points to a maturing market. Fresh capital accounted for ₹3,555 crore, or nearly 95% of the total issue size in the first half of 2026. The offer-for-sale component dropped to ₹197 crore from ₹328 crore a year earlier, indicating that companies are accessing equity markets primarily for business expansion rather than to facilitate early shareholder exits.

This resilience in primary issuance contrasts with broader market weakness. The Sensex declined 12.5% and the Nifty 50 fell 11.8% between January and March, while the India VIX climbed to 27.9. B2K Analytics attributed the continued SME fundraising to strong domestic participation, elevated borrowing costs pushing firms toward equity, and a typical one- to two-month lag between secondary market corrections and IPO pipelines.

Second-quarter data mirrored the first-half trends, with 38 IPOs raising ₹1,89
