Nigerian Navy seizes 43,000 litres in Rivers State oil raid

Nigeria's military has seized 43,000 litres of illegally refined fuel in Rivers State, signalling a sustained crackdown on the oil theft that deprives the government of crucial export revenue.

The Nigerian Navy dismantled four illegal refining sites in the Egbema axis of Rivers State, recovering 43,000 litres of illicitly processed petroleum products. Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information, disclosed the details of the raid on July 11.

The operation, conducted by personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship PATHFINDER, targeted a hotspot for crude oil theft in the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area. “The operation resulted in the recovery of approximately 28,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and 15,000 litres of suspected Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) concealed in dugout pits, reservoirs, and sacks,” the Navy stated.

For international investors and oil majors operating in the Niger Delta, the intensity of these military raids serves as a key indicator of infrastructure security. Nigeria relies heavily on crude exports for foreign exchange, but systematic theft and illegal refining have historically forced the country to produce well below its OPEC quotas. Any sustained disruption of these illicit networks is closely monitored as a potential catalyst for improved official output.

The latest raid is a component of Operation DELTA SENTINEL, the military's flagship campaign to protect critical energy infrastructure across the oil-producing region. “The Nigerian Navy remains steadfast in sustaining intelligence-driven operations under Operation DELTA SENTINEL to dismantle criminal networks, deny economic saboteurs freedom of action, and safeguard the nation’s maritime environment and economic interests,” the Navy said.

Saturday's interception adds to a sharp increase in enforcement actions across Rivers State over the past few weeks. On July 2, naval forces dismantled a separate storage facility in Bonny Local Government Area, seizing roughly 20,500 litres of stolen crude from concealed pits. Just a week before the latest raid, a naval team recovered 11,800 litres of diesel stored in 125 sacks at a hidden fuel depot.

Additional recent operations in the state have yielded even larger caches, with separate raids recovering 22,870 litres, 63,290 litres, and 103,500 litres of suspected illegally refined petroleum products. While the volumes seized in individual raids represent a fraction of Nigeria's daily production, the escalating tempo of Operation DELTA SENTINEL highlights a stricter security posture. Energy market participants will now be assessing whether this heightened military presence translates into a measurable recovery in the country's official crude production figures.
