Anthropic AI math win highlights bitcoin's shift to AI trade

Anthropic's Claude model disproved an 87-year-old mathematical theorem, reinforcing a market dynamic where bitcoin increasingly trades as a derivative of artificial intelligence rather than a standalone asset.

Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 model has disproved the Jacobian conjecture, a famous mathematical problem that had remained unsolved since 1939. Levent Alpöge, a number theorist at Anthropic and former Harvard fellow, announced the finding on Sunday. The AI produced a concrete counterexample that mathematicians were able to verify by hand within a single day.

The conjecture, included on mathematician Stephen Smale's influential list of unsolved problems for the century, posited that a specific type of polynomial function could always be reversed if it passed a standard algebraic check. Claude Fable 5 built a function that passed this test but failed to be reversible because three different inputs yielded the exact same output. While abstract, the breakthrough carries concrete implications for financial markets by demonstrating the rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence capabilities. Bitcoin has spent months trading on an AI narrative, moving in tandem with semiconductor and memory stocks rather than reacting to crypto-specific catalysts.

This correlation was visible last Friday when Chinese lab Moonshot AI released a model—known as Kimi AI—that disrupted the semiconductor sector, dragging bitcoin down sharply. The cryptocurrency recovered earlier this week only as chipmakers bounced back, highlighting its new status as a proxy for broader technology sentiment.

Part of this price linkage is structural. Bitcoin miners have increasingly pivoted to become AI data-center operators, meaning their underlying business fundamentals are now tied directly to demand for computing power. Consequently, the cryptocurrency's primary holders are exposed to the same supply-chain dynamics as traditional technology hardware companies.

Beyond the miners, the broader trend represents a significant shift in speculative capital. Investors are directing funds toward computing infrastructure, chips, and model builders, drawn by an AI capability curve that is steepening rapidly. This poses a challenge for crypto investors: holding a token that acts as a sidecar to the AI cycle raises the question of why not simply invest in the core technology driving the market.
