Coinbase config error caused 50-minute trading halt
A routine configuration error halted trading and transactions across Coinbase's platforms for 50 minutes, raising fresh questions about infrastructure stability as the exchange expands its traditional finance offerings.
Coinbase experienced a platform-wide outage on July 14 that paralyzed trading, deposits, and withdrawals for 50 minutes. "Coinbase experienced a service disruption that affected transfers, card transactions, and onchain services across our retail, institutional, and developer platforms," the company wrote. The disruption, which lasted from 12:37 PM ET to 1:25 PM ET, also halted onchain swaps on Base and Solana DEX integrations.
In a post-mortem released on Tuesday, the exchange attributed the halt to an unintended misconfiguration during a routine, "low-risk" configuration change to a shared production Kubernetes cluster. The error caused a resource name collision that bypassed pre-production checks and blocked internal asynchronous workflows. "Workflows are how Coinbase moves money: trades settle, transfers complete, and card transactions are authorized through them," Coinbase explained.
The firm stated that customer funds were never at risk, noting that pending transactions were automatically completed once network access was restored. Despite the disruption, Coinbase shares showed resilience in the market, rising more than 11% to $178.74.
The outage arrives at a critical juncture for the largest US crypto exchange. Coinbase is actively attempting to position itself as an "Everything Exchange" to compete with traditional brokerages like Robinhood in stock trading, while simultaneously expanding its institutional Prime services. Frequent technical disruptions threaten to undermine investor confidence in this broader financial expansion.
System reliability has been a persistent challenge for the crypto platform. The July 14 incident follows two consecutive outages on the Coinbase-incubated Base blockchain in late June. While traditional exchanges like the NYSE occasionally suffer technical glitches, Coinbase's repeated performance issues draw particular scrutiny as CEO Brian Armstrong increasingly emphasizes AI-assisted coding.
To mitigate future risks, Coinbase indicated it is actively redesigning its infrastructure to enable faster reversions. "Our goal is always zero downtime," the company stated. As of Tuesday, the exchange's status page indicated some users were still experiencing delayed SEPA deposits and withdrawals.
