Access Bank targets Nigerian SMEs with new digital app

Access Bank will launch a dedicated small business app to capture a larger share of Nigeria’s underserved MSME market and drive digital lending.

Access Bank will introduce the Access SME App on July 24, 2026, during its inaugural MSME Conference in Lagos. The digital platform integrates financial and business management tools into a single interface to streamline operations for small enterprises.

The launch represents a calculated push by the lender to deepen its footprint in a lucrative but underserved segment. Micro, small, and medium enterprises drive much of Nigeria’s employment and economic output. However, these businesses frequently struggle with restricted access to credit and slow technological adoption, limiting their scalability.

By offering an operational app, Access Bank is positioning itself to capture proprietary data on small business cash flows. This move effectively shifts the bank's MSME strategy from traditional lending toward embedded finance, locking in corporate clients through daily-use software. Capturing this operational data allows the lender to underwrite loans with greater precision, reducing risk while expanding its loan book.

The upcoming conference, themed around artificial intelligence, underscores this digital pivot. Representatives from Master Card, Huawei, Dataleum, and the presidency’s entrepreneurship division will attend. Their involvement indicates that Access Bank is trying to build a broader technological ecosystem rather than just distributing a standalone banking product.

“Behind every small business is an entrepreneur with big ambitions," said Abiodun Olubitan, Group Head, SME Banking, Access Bank Plc. "Through this conference and the launch of the Access Bank SME App, we are equipping business owners with practical solutions that will help them navigate today’s digital economy, strengthen their operations, and build businesses that can stand the test of time.”

Access Bank, a subsidiary of Access Holdings Plc, operates over 700 branches across 24 countries and serves more than 60 million customers. The bank employs about 28,000 people in Nigeria alone. It has historically channelled capital into SME sectors like agriculture, trade, and manufacturing alongside development finance institutions. This software launch builds on that foundation, aiming to convert advisory support and capacity-building programmes into tangible digital market share.
