Intuitive Surgical drops 29% as AI rally saps quality growth valuations
Intuitive Surgical lost nearly a third of its value over the past year as investors abandoned quality growth equities outside the artificial intelligence sector, dragging down NZS Capital's otherwise strong second-quarter returns.
Intuitive Surgical closed at $353.17 on July 20, marking a 29.42% decline over the past 52 weeks and a 10.55% drop in the past month. The robotic surgery leader, valued at $125.08 billion, was the top individual detractor to absolute returns in the second quarter for NZS Capital's Growth Equity Strategy.
NZS Capital posted a strong quarter overall, delivering a net return of 24.76%. This significantly outperformed the 14.79% return of the Morningstar Global Target Market Exposure Index. The firm attributed its outperformance to an overweight position in semiconductors, strong stock selection in software and industrials, and zero exposure to energy.
Despite these broad gains, healthcare and real estate were the only sectors in the NZS portfolio to contribute negatively to absolute returns, with materials and financials lagging. Regarding Intuitive Surgical specifically, NZS Capital noted that the company's underlying business remains intact.
"While fundamentals remain solid for Intuitive Surgical, the stock's multiple has not been immune from the broad de-rating in 'quality growth' stocks we've seen outside of the AI ecosystem," the firm wrote to investors.
This commentary highlights a stark bifurcation in equity markets during the second quarter of 2026. A surge in demand for AI infrastructure, paired with geopolitical stabilization and upbeat earnings reports, fueled broad market gains. However, capital is aggressively rotating away from established growth compounders that lack a direct AI narrative, compressing their valuation multiples.
Institutional positioning reflects this shifting sentiment. The number of hedge fund portfolios holding Intuitive Surgical fell to 103 at the end of the first quarter, down from 109 in the previous quarter. The stock's exclusion from the top 40 most popular hedge fund holdings underscores how quickly market leadership has migrated toward AI-centric investments, leaving even highly profitable medical technology companies facing severe valuation headwinds.
