Steep Valuations Temper Investment Appeal of Costco and Fastenal Shares

While Costco and Fastenal continue to deliver strong dividend growth and high returns on capital, their elevated earnings multiples are prompting analysts to recommend caution for new capital allocation.

Investors evaluating dividend growth stocks are encountering a challenging landscape of elevated pricing among traditionally reliable compounders. Despite demonstrating the durable brands and high returns on capital favored by value investors, companies like Costco Wholesale and Fastenal are trading at multiples that limit near-term upside.

Costco Wholesale shares currently trade at $940.87, reflecting a steep 47 times trailing earnings and 41 times forward earnings. The retailer continues to execute well, reporting third-quarter fiscal 2026 membership fees of $1.37 billion, a 10.7 percent increase driven by an 89.7 percent worldwide renewal rate.

Comparable sales rose 9.8 percent, with digital comparable sales jumping 21.5 percent as the company approaches 940 warehouses by fiscal year end. Management has also steadily increased the dividend from $1.02 in early 2024 to $1.47 currently.

However, the stock offers a mere 0.57 percent dividend yield and carries a price-to-earnings-to-growth ratio of approximately five. With shares up 9.42 percent year to date but down 0.81 percent over the past year, the consensus analyst target of $1,076.91 suggests only mid-teens upside, making it a hold for existing investors rather than a fresh buy.

Fastenal presents a similar profile of operational strength meeting valuation resistance. The industrial supplier recently reported second-quarter revenue of $2.39 billion, up 14.74 percent, with earnings per share of $0.33.

Contract customer daily sales grew 17.6 percent to represent 75.8 percent of total revenue, highlighted by a 20.5 percent surge in June sales. The business maintains elite returns on equity at 34.3 percent and offers a 1.97 percent dividend yield.

Despite these metrics, the stock trades at 39 times earnings after a 14.6 percent year-to-date gain. Gross margins recently compressed by 75 basis points due to customer mix and tariff pressures, while planned 2026 capital expenditures are set to jump to between $310 million and $330 million from $230.6 million.

Analyst sentiment reflects this precarious setup. The consensus price target of $47.84 sits barely above the current $45.49 quote, with sell and strong sell ratings matching buy recommendations among covering analysts, suggesting a better entry point near $40 for new capital.

In contrast, Visa offers a more compelling entry point for investors seeking similar quality. The payments giant trades at 24 times forward earnings, with 37 of 40 covering analysts maintaining a bullish outlook and a buy rating on the stock.
