Memecoins drive Robinhood Chain's $9B volume as RWA strategy lags

Memecoins drive Robinhood Chain's $9B volume as RWA strategy lags

Robinhood Chain has amassed $431 million in total value locked since its July 1 launch, but its long-term valuation relies on overcoming a heavy reliance on memecoin trading to execute its tokenized real-world asset strategy.

Robinhood Chain has accumulated $431 million in total value locked and nearly $400 million in stablecoin market capitalization in less than three weeks since going live on July 1. The Ethereum Layer 2 network, built on the Arbitrum tech stack, is processing roughly 6 million transactions daily with over 250,000 active users.

However, cumulative decentralized exchange volume approaching $9 billion reveals a network currently driven by speculation rather than structural adoption. According to data from Entropy Advisors, more than 80% of that trading volume stems from higher-risk memecoins. "Early activity so far suggests strong user interest, although memecoin trading dominates DEX volumes," noted FalconX Senior Crypto Market Strategist Martin Gaspar.

The network's actual differentiator for investors is its stated focus on tokenized real-world assets. Robinhood has introduced Stock Tokens, which are ERC-20 tokenized debt securities backed 1:1 by underlying shares held by a U.S. custodian. "Robinhood Chain appears positioned to onboard millions of its users onchain and explores key unlocks of crypto technology, especially with regards to RWA," Gaspar wrote.

That strategy remains in its infancy. Data from RWA.xyz shows Robinhood's tokenized stocks sit at just $14 million, dwarfed by Ondo at $851 million and xStocks at $481 million. Still, Robinhood's retail base of nearly 28 million users provides a distribution channel that could close this gap. "Ultimately Robinhood's stated focus for the chain is RWA, so tokenized stock market cap as well as functional onchain utility for these tokens could be key drivers of activity going forward," Gaspar wrote.

Beyond trading, the chain is pushing into decentralized lending through Robinhood Earn. The product allows users to lend USDG through Morpho-powered vaults supported by Steakhouse, Ethena, Spark, and Maple. A key distinction for institutional risk assessment is that the vaults are insured by Lloyd's of London and RELM against cyber events or smart contract exploits, a level of protection FalconX noted is rare in DeFi and absent in Coinbase's similar offerings.

Robinhood Earn advertises an estimated 7% annual percentage yield, though the underlying Steakhouse USDG vault paid only 1.9% as of July 20. Analysts estimate a Merkl campaign is bridging this yield gap, a subsidy sustainable up to roughly $2 billion in vault total value locked. As of July 19, Morpho Markets on Robinhood Chain held a total market size of $280 million, with vault TVL at $194 million.

Wall Street is tracking the chain's progress as a potential revenue driver. Bernstein recently raised its price target for Robinhood to $160 from $130, maintaining an Outperform rating. The firm models prediction markets, perpetual futures, and Robinhood Chain to account for 18% of the company's total revenue by 2027.
