Novo Nordisk gains EU approval for first oral Wegovy pill

Novo Nordisk secured European Commission approval for an oral version of Wegovy, becoming the first GLP-1 weight-loss pill available across the EU and removing a major barrier to patient adoption.

The European Commission has approved Novo Nordisk's once-daily oral semaglutide 25 mg tablet for weight management, to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. The decision makes Wegovy the first GLP-1 receptor agonist available in pill form across all EU member states. It targets adults with a body mass index of at least 30, or at least 27 with a weight-related comorbidity.

For investors, the transition from an injection to a tablet represents a major commercial catalyst. Needle aversion is a well-documented barrier to GLP-1 adoption, meaning a pill has the potential to unlock a broader patient population reluctant to use injectable therapies. By securing first-mover advantage with an oral GLP-1 weight-loss drug, Novo Nordisk deepens its competitive moat in a lucrative market increasingly targeted by rivals.

The approval follows a positive opinion from the European Medicines Agency in May 2026 and is backed by the OASIS 4 clinical trial. Participants taking the oral drug lost approximately 17% of their body weight, compared to 3% for those on a placebo. Roughly one-third of patients on the tablet achieved weight loss of 20% or more.

The company stated that the safety and tolerability profile of the oral formulation is consistent with its established injectable counterpart. Adverse event-related discontinuation rates stood at 6.9% for the oral semaglutide group, compared to 5.9% for the placebo group. Novo Nordisk plans to introduce the oral treatment in additional countries during the second half of 2026.

Alongside the tablet, the European Commission also approved a 7.2 mg injectable Wegovy dose delivered via a single-dose pen. The oral pill marks the fifth global regulatory approval for the Wegovy tablet, following earlier authorizations in the US, UK, United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. These sequential approvals underscore Novo Nordisk's strategy to saturate global markets with both oral and injectable options.
