Netflix pays $587M cash for Ben Affleck AI startup

Netflix has paid $587 million in cash for Ben Affleck’s AI production startup InterPositive, cementing the streamer's costly bet on generative technology to cut production costs.

Netflix has paid $587 million in cash to acquire InterPositive, an artificial intelligence filmmaking startup co-founded by actor and director Ben Affleck. The streaming giant disclosed the exact financial terms in a new regulatory filing. This official figure confirms a subsequent Bloomberg report from March, which had estimated the deal's value could reach up to $600 million.

Under the terms of the agreement, the entire InterPositive workforce is transitioning to Netflix. Affleck will serve the streaming company in the newly created role of senior advisor. While Netflix initially announced the acquisition in March, it declined to release the purchase price at that time.

InterPositive builds generative AI tools specifically targeted at the post-production process. According to Affleck, the startup's technology is designed to "protect the power of human creativity." In practical terms, the software helps filmmakers correct and enhance footage by addressing common production hurdles like missing shots, background replacements, and incorrect lighting.

For market participants, the sheer size of the cash outlay is the most significant data point. A $587 million expenditure on a single AI toolmaker represents a major capital deployment for Netflix. It highlights a strategic shift where streamers are moving beyond licensing software to outright acquiring the underlying technology providers.

The deal also provides concrete evidence of how deeply Netflix has already embedded generative AI into its operations. During its most recent earnings report, the company revealed that approximately 300 of its titles have already utilized generative AI. This indicates that InterPositive's technology is not being acquired for theoretical future use, but to scale an existing, proven workflow.

From a production economics standpoint, the financial logic rests on mitigating the industry's highest costs. Traditional film and television production requires expensive reshoots when footage is flawed or environmental conditions change. If InterPositive's AI tools can reliably solve problems like missing shots or incorrect lighting in post-production, Netflix can potentially avoid the significant labor and logistical expenses associated with physical production delays.

The acquisition positions Netflix at the forefront of a coming consolidation in entertainment technology. By securing a senior advisory role for Affleck, Netflix is also tying a high-profile Hollywood figure directly to its AI integration strategy. This move may help the company navigate the cultural and labor sensitivities surrounding AI in the broader entertainment industry while locking down critical intellectual property.
