ECB, US Earnings to Drive LatAm FX Ahead of Copom

A quiet Latin American monetary policy calendar leaves the Brazilian real and Mexican peso at the mercy of the European Central Bank's rate decision and US tech earnings this week.

Latin American currency markets enter a holding pattern this week as central banks across the region take a pause. Official calendars show no scheduled policy meetings in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, or Peru between July 20 and July 24.

Without domestic catalysts, the direction of the Brazilian real and Mexican peso will depend almost entirely on external drivers. Country-specific risk is low, as confirmed data releases from statistics agencies like Brazil's IBGE or Mexico's INEGI are absent.

The primary focal point is the European Central Bank’s interest rate decision on Thursday. This announcement will steer the euro and heavily influence the dollar against emerging market currencies, making it the busiest 24-hour period of the week for macro traders. Japan's CPI and Canadian retail sales also land on Thursday.

Alongside the ECB, risk appetite will be dictated by a wave of heavyweight US corporate earnings. Second-quarter results from Alphabet and Tesla will serve as a barometer for the tech sector, ultimately setting the tone for broader global markets.

Despite the local policy void, this is an active week for positioning in Latin America. Traders are adjusting portfolios ahead of two closely watched rate decisions that fall just after the trading week ends. Chile's central bank gathers on July 27-28, followed by Brazil's Copom on August 4-5.

This proximity creates a fragile setup for regional assets. Any sharp moves in the dollar or global yields triggered by the ECB's forward guidance could quickly alter the monetary landscape before those Latin American decisions are finalized.

The remainder of the global calendar is relatively light. Monday features US leading indicators and a June CPI reading, Tuesday brings UK unemployment and inflation data, and Friday closes the week with US new home sales and a flash S&P Global Services PMI.
