Buffett Backs Alphabet AI Push With $10B Berkshire Bet

Warren Buffett has taken credit for Berkshire Hathaway's $10 billion investment in Alphabet's AI infrastructure, signalling confidence in the tech giant's ability to generate long-term capital returns through its custom silicon cost advantage.

Warren Buffett has confirmed that Berkshire Hathaway’s substantial stake in Alphabet was his direct initiative. The investment began in the third quarter of last year, right before Buffett's planned retirement at the end of 2025. Berkshire subsequently expanded its position earlier this year through a $10 billion private placement to help Alphabet raise money for its AI infrastructure.

The endorsement carries significant weight as the company transitions to current CEO Greg Abel. In a recent interview, Buffett said "the key to investing was finding businesses that can earn a high return on capital for a long period of time." Both executives appear confident that Alphabet's AI investments will meet this strict benchmark.

The financial logic for Berkshire hinges on Alphabet's proprietary Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). Developed over a decade ago, these custom chips are paired with a tightly optimized hardware and software stack. This architecture provides a structural cost advantage over cloud competitors and AI model builders that rely primarily on Nvidia's more expensive graphics processing units.

By utilizing TPUs, Alphabet can train its Gemini frontier models and handle inference tasks at a lower cost than rivals like OpenAI. When combined with Alphabet's established distribution network and advertising infrastructure, this cost efficiency allows the company to operate a strong and profitable consumer AI business.

Alphabet also maximizes the return on its computing infrastructure by splitting capacity between its internal AI needs and third-party cloud demand. This flexibility is already driving outsized financial returns. Last quarter, Alphabet reported cloud revenue growth of 63%, while cloud operating income tripled.

Furthermore, Alphabet's silicon advantage is beginning to generate external revenue. Anthropic has started placing large orders for TPU chips through Broadcom, an Alphabet partner. This development points to a potential high-margin revenue stream outside of Alphabet's core cloud and advertising operations, further justifying the capital return thesis that convinced Buffett to make the $10 billion bet.
