Venice yacht protest flags US-Italy rift and energy price anger

The arrival of billionaire US envoy Tilman Fertitta's superyacht in Venice sparked violent protests, underscoring local anger over energy inflation and a widening diplomatic rift between Washington and Rome.

Hundreds of protesters clashed with riot police in Venice on Friday against the arrival of US Ambassador Tilman Fertitta’s 117-meter superyacht. The demonstration targeted the billionaire hospitality mogul's "Coastal Diplomacy 250" tour, which has taken him along 13 Italian coastal regions ahead of Saturday's Redentore festival.

For investors, the unrest transcends a local dispute over overtourism. Organizers explicitly linked the vessel's imposing presence in St. Mark’s Basin to broader economic fallout from Washington's foreign policy. “It is the umpteenth slap in the face of a city and all of the people in Venice who struggle to reach the end of the month due to an increase in prices caused by Trump’s war,” said organizer Stella Morion, referencing recent US strikes on Iran.

The towering six-story yacht, which features two helipads and two swimming pools, reignited local tensions over large vessels in the lagoon. Activist Emanuele Lepore noted the ship's presence was particularly galling after residents' long fight to ban cruise ships from the historic center.

The backlash also highlights a cooling in the once-close relationship between Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni and the Trump administration. Meloni notably skipped 250th-anniversary celebrations at the US Embassy following a series of social media attacks by Trump. This diplomatic friction creates potential headwinds for bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

Fertitta, who has an estimated net worth of $11.3 billion and owns the Houston Rockets, declined interview requests but defended the tour. “I like Italians, we Americans respect freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest; Coastal Diplomacy celebrates our nation’s founding and these fundamental rights,” he said in a statement. Political analyst Giovanni Orsina noted the novelty of an envoy funding his own diplomatic tour, stating it "can be perceived negatively" but also viewed as "a sign of attention toward the country."

The envoy has already met with regional officials in Sicily and sailed the coastlines of Calabria and Puglia. Details of his remaining private meetings in Venice remain undisclosed.
