How Is Principal Financial's Stock Performance Compared to Other Financial Stocks

Des Moines, Iowa-based Principal Financial Group, Inc. (PFG) provides retirement, asset management, and insurance products and services to businesses, individuals, and institutional clients worldwide. The company has a market cap of $25 billion and operates through Retirement and Income Solutions, Principal Asset Management, and Benefits and Protection segments.

Companies with a market cap of $10 billion or more are typically called "large-cap stocks." PFG fits squarely into that category, with a market cap above this threshold that reflects its substantial size and influence in the asset management industry.

However, the stock currently trades 4.3% below its 52-week high of $121.18 recorded on Sept. 3. PFG has grown 5.2% over the past three months, outperforming the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF's (XLF) 3.4% rise during the same time frame.

In the longer term, PFG has delivered a different performance. The stock has surged 43.4% over the past 52 weeks, outpacing XLF's 3.3% rise over the same period. PFG has been trading above its 200-day moving average since last year and also above its 50-day moving average since the start of this month.

On July 27, PFG stock rose 1.7% following the release of its mixed Q2 2026 earnings. The company's revenue for the quarter amounted to $3.9 billion, failing to touch the Street's forecasts. However, its adjusted EPS came in at $2.50, successfully topping the consensus estimates. The company also returned $427 million to shareholders, including $250 million in share repurchases, and also raised its quarterly dividend to $0.84 per share.

When stacked against its rival, Ares Management Corporation (ARES) has declined 30% over the past year, underperforming PFG.

Despite its outperformance, Wall Street's view of PFG stock is skeptical. Among the 14 analysts covering the stock, the overall consensus rating is "Hold." Its mean price target of $112.77 is below the current price level. However, its Street-high price target of $125 offers a 7.8% upside potential.
