Hong Kong set to finance Chinese green-tech expansion into emerging markets

Senior bankers say Hong Kong's offshore yuan liquidity and deep sustainable finance markets will channel capital to Chinese green-technology firms expanding into developing economies amid rising geopolitical fragmentation.

Hong Kong is positioning itself as the primary financial conduit for Chinese green-technology companies expanding into developing economies. Executives from major international and regional banks stated at a Monday forum that the city's financial infrastructure is critical for deploying capital into the global energy transition.

Geopolitical fragmentation and elevated funding costs are fundamentally reshaping how capital flows into climate-resilience projects worldwide. Bankers from Bank of China (Hong Kong), DBS, HSBC and Standard Chartered highlighted that the city's offshore yuan liquidity and deep sustainable-finance market offer a distinct structural advantage for cross-border deals.

Mainland enterprises specializing in solar power, wind energy and battery storage are increasingly exporting their solutions to the Global South. Natalie Blyth, HSBC’s global head of sustainable finance and transition, noted that these mainland companies currently possess some of the "most dynamic low-carbon technologies" available on the global market.

Wang Huabin, deputy CEO of Bank of China (Hong Kong), emphasized the city's historical leadership in the regional sustainable-finance sector. He described Hong Kong as a "bridge for Chinese green technology going global," leveraging its professional services to support outbound investments.

Wang added that combining the local sustainable-finance market with abundant offshore yuan liquidity creates a comprehensive support system. This ecosystem is designed to provide both the necessary financing and the professional advisory services required for Chinese companies executing complex overseas expansions.

Despite the strong pipeline of exportable technology, securing viable investment targets remains a significant hurdle for institutional lenders. Bankers noted that identifying emerging market projects capable of delivering strong, reliable financial returns is now the primary challenge for capital deployment.

These strategic insights emerged during an annual forum organized by the Hong Kong Green Finance Association and the Greater Bay Area Green Finance Alliance. The event gathered policymakers, financiers and industry leaders to navigate sustainable investment strategies amid escalating trade and economic uncertainty.
