Jaiprakash Power Ventures shares rally on strong quarterly profit rebound
Shares of the Indian energy producer recovered from early losses on Monday after the company reported a sharp return to profitability and expanded operating margins for the June quarter.
Jaiprakash Power Ventures shares climbed more than 3.3 percent on the National Stock Exchange on Monday, reversing early losses to reach an intraday high of ₹17.14. The stock initially opened lower at ₹16.29 before buyers stepped in, pushing the company's market capitalization to ₹11,431.57 crore by midday.
The intraday recovery followed the release of robust first-quarter results that signaled a decisive turnaround in the company's financial performance. Consolidated net profit surged to ₹468.84 crore for the three months ended June 30, 2026, marking a sharp reversal from a ₹13.37 crore loss in the preceding quarter and a significant jump from ₹278.13 crore a year earlier.
Top-line growth was anchored by the power segment, with revenue from operations climbing to ₹1,806.49 crore from ₹1,470.79 crore in the March quarter. Operating efficiency improved notably, as earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose 26.47 percent year-on-year to ₹760.49 crore. This pushed the EBITDA margin to 42.75 percent, up from 38 percent in the same period last year.
Investors looking closely at the balance sheet will note a strategic retreat from unviable assets. The company recognized an exceptional item of ₹193.63 crore related to provisions for surrendering the Amelia North and Bandha North coal mines. Management cited the financial and operational unviability of these specific mining leases as the reason for the write-down.
Standalone metrics mirrored the consolidated strength, with net profit reaching ₹468.95 crore against a prior loss of ₹23.35 crore. Total income rose to ₹1,806.43 crore while expenses contracted to ₹1,235.94 crore. Basic and diluted earnings per share stood at ₹0.52, recovering from a loss of ₹0.0153 per share in the previous quarter.
Despite the strong earnings print, the stock has faced headwinds in recent months amid broader market weakness. The shares are down 7.02 percent over the past month and 5.28 percent year-to-date, though they still boast a 322.28 percent gain over a five-year horizon. The Monday rally suggests investors are rewarding the improved core operating margins despite the near-term volatility.
