India’s Nifty 50 Breaks Key Support Levels as Market Momentum Fades
India’s benchmark Nifty 50 index has fallen for a fourth consecutive week, fracturing critical technical support levels and signaling a sustained loss of market momentum despite robust macroeconomic data.
India’s benchmark Nifty 50 index extended its decline for a fourth consecutive week, closing below the previous week’s low. The drop represents a 3.54 percent fall from its recent swing high, accompanied by the highest trading volume in five weeks.
This surge in activity during a downturn indicates intensified distribution by market participants. The persistent selling pressure has overwhelmed positive macroeconomic signals, including stronger-than-estimated gross domestic product figures.
The index has now fractured multiple layers of technical support. It recently broke below the 23,900 to 24,000 zone and closed beneath its 100-day moving average, which currently sits at 24,028.
Broader moving averages confirm the deteriorating trend. On the weekly chart, the Nifty closed below both its 20-week and 30-week weighted moving averages, while the 50-day moving average has flattened, stripping the intermediate trend of its upward bias.
The current correction is notably protracted compared to the market’s previous rally. The index took 23 trading days to retrace 80 percent of its prior 4.95 percent advance, which had occurred in just six to seven sessions following the July 24 low.
Rebounding from these levels will require decisive buyer participation. Market analysts note that the technical picture will remain vulnerable to selling pressure until the index can reclaim and sustain trading above the 100-day moving average.
Failure to mount a recovery opens the door to further declines. The immediate downside support zone rests between 23,780 and 23,800, and a decisive breach of this range could extend the corrective move toward 23,600.
Market sentiment has also failed to find a floor following the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s recent announcement of a regulatory review. Trading volumes have remained subdued on most days since the introduction of the CAS framework, with August 31 marking the only notable exception.
