Indian Equities Face Cautious Open Amid Rising Crude and Middle East Tensions
Indian benchmark indices are poised for a cautious open as escalating US-Iran tensions and elevated crude prices threaten to disrupt global risk sentiment and weigh on the country's import bill.
Indian equity markets are set to open on a subdued note this Monday, with the Gift Nifty indicating a discount to its previous close amid mixed global signals. This follows a volatile prior session where the Sensex gained 0.48 per cent to 76,515.43, while the Nifty 50 edged down 0.10 per cent to 23,897.70.
The primary headwind remains the sharp escalation in Middle East geopolitical risks. Following reported US strikes on Iranian oil tankers and Tehran’s subsequent declaration of a restricted shipping zone near the Strait of Hormuz, energy markets have surged. West Texas Intermediate crude is hovering around $92 per barrel, while Brent has approached $97.
Ponmudi R, chief executive of Enrich Money, noted that these elevated energy costs overshadow supportive regional cues, such as recent gains in Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi. Persistently high oil prices directly threaten to expand India’s import bill and fuel domestic inflation concerns, limiting investor appetite for aggressive equity positioning.
Market participants are now pivoting their attention to upcoming US inflation data, which serves as the next major macroeconomic trigger. Stronger-than-expected US employment figures have already reinforced expectations of a restrictive monetary policy stance from the Federal Reserve at its mid-September meeting.
Technical Levels and Market Breadth
Technically, the Indian indices remain trapped in a broader consolidation phase. Ponmudi identified the 77,000 to 77,500 zone as immediate resistance for the Sensex, with critical psychological support resting at 76,000. A decisive break below 75,500 could accelerate selling pressure.
For the Nifty 50, Hitesh Rathi, a technical analyst at Angel One, highlighted the 23,750 to 23,600 band as crucial support. Although the point-and-figure breadth indicator has cooled to 35 per cent, suggesting a limited probability of an extended downtrend, Rathi warned that price action must confirm a turnaround before investors commit capital.
The banking index also shows prolonged indecision, having consolidated for nearly 24 sessions. Sudeep Shah, head of technical and derivatives research at SBI Securities, pointed to the 56,800 to 56,900 zone as key support, with a breakout above 57,900 required to signal a definitive directional move. Meanwhile, gold has retreated to a one-week low near $4,425 an ounce as strong US jobs data bolstered rate-hike expectations.
Amid the broader caution, brokerage analysts have identified selective intraday opportunities. Firms including Choice Broking and Anand Rathi recently flagged eight equities for active trading, including Reliance Industries, Adani Enterprises, and Emcure Pharmaceuticals, though they emphasize strict adherence to stop-loss limits in this volatile environment.
