Indian Markets Face Negative Open as US-Iran Tensions Drive Oil Above $91
Indian equity benchmarks are poised for a lower open as escalating US-Iran military strikes push crude prices higher and revive global inflation concerns, testing key technical support levels.
Indian equity markets are set to open lower on Tuesday following a negative signal from the Gift Nifty, which traded at 24,207. This reflects a 44-point discount to the previous close of Nifty futures, extending a subdued trend where the Nifty 50 fell 0.39% to 24,080 and the Sensex dropped 0.40% to 76,957.
The cautious sentiment is driven by fresh military escalations between the United States and Iran, marking their first mutual strikes in approximately a month. US forces targeted an island in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iranian forces launched attacks on the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
These geopolitical developments have sent Brent crude futures nearly 1% higher to trade above $91 per barrel, following a 3% jump in the prior session. Consequently, US bond yields have risen, reigniting fears of persistent inflation and tighter monetary policy, which pressured the S&P 500 down 0.33% to 7,686.14 and the Nasdaq Composite down 0.12% to 26,370.89 overnight.
US President Donald Trump intensified the rhetoric on Truth Social, declaring, “Iran is officially a Failed Nation. IT IS DEAD!” He alleged that the country has suffered a currency collapse and lost critical military capabilities, including its navy and air force.
Despite the geopolitical overhang, India’s macroeconomic fundamentals offer a crucial buffer for domestic investors. The economy expanded by 7.8% in the April-June quarter of FY27, absorbing the shocks of the West Asian conflict, a delayed southwest monsoon, and uncertain tariff policies.
Market technicians are now closely watching the 24,000 level on the Nifty for directional cues. Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research at Kotak Securities, noted that holding above this mark could trigger a quick pullback toward 24,200-24,300, while a breakdown may accelerate selling toward 23,800.
Nagaraj Shetti, a senior technical research analyst at HDFC Securities, echoed this view. He highlighted that the 24,000 zone aligns with the recent swing low and the 29 July opening upside gap, providing a foundation for a potential near-term bounce.
