Lionel Messi announced his retirement from the Argentine national team on Monday, concluding an international career spanning more than two decades. The 39-year-old forward confirmed his departure in a handwritten letter posted to Instagram following Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time loss to Spain in last month's World Cup final.
"Time is running short, stages come to a close, and this is one that hurts a lot," Messi wrote, adding that he has "nothing left to give." The decision arrives shortly after the death of his father, Jorge, an event Messi previously noted left him unsure of "how to go on."
For sports investors and broadcasters, the retirement shifts Messi’s exclusive brand value to his club team, Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami CF. Without the global television pull of the Argentine national team, known locally as La Albiceleste, MLS will rely solely on his presence to drive international viewership and commercial partnerships.
Messi leaves the national team with 121 goals, 66 assists, and six titles. He finishes his international career with the second-highest goal tally in World Cup history, trailing only French striker Kylian Mbappé.
The 2026 World Cup served as a final showcase for the squad that won the 2022 championship and earned a third gold star on its jersey. Argentina advanced through the tournament by rallying from near-elimination matches against Cape Verde, Egypt, and England, with the majority of their goals scored after the 75th minute.
Messi’s international tenure was marked by extreme volatility in public and commercial perception. After joining the squad at age 18 in 2005, he faced intense criticism from sports commentators for underperforming despite his rising profile at FC Barcelona.
