Nvidia and CrowdStrike Gain Ground as Geopolitical Tensions Drag Down Broader Market

Geopolitical strikes and rising interest rate fears pushed the S&P 500 lower, but strategic investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure and cybersecurity drove gains for Nvidia and CrowdStrike while Apple navigated a historic leadership transition.

The S&P 500 declined on Monday following a month-long pause in hostilities as the United States and Iran exchanged military strikes. Despite the broader market weakness and a surge in crude oil prices, shares of Nvidia and CrowdStrike posted gains driven by distinct corporate and sector-specific catalysts.

Nvidia advanced more than 1% after announcing a $3.5 billion investment in chip designer MediaTek. Portfolio director Jeff Marks noted the deal appears to be a strategic maneuver against Broadcom, which holds a leading position in custom artificial intelligence chips. A major investment trust recently halved its Broadcom position to reduce exposure to the artificial intelligence trade.

This positive news for Nvidia helped offset recent macroeconomic headwinds. The chipmaker's shares had previously fallen 4.5% following Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium. Warsh suggested interest rates may need to rise further, a move that could complicate the artificial intelligence data center buildout by making new project financing significantly more expensive.

In the cybersecurity sector, CrowdStrike climbed 4% on Monday. The rally followed commentary from artificial intelligence writer and podcaster Dwarkesh Patel, who argued that enterprises must aggressively increase cybersecurity spending to protect themselves in the artificial intelligence era. Competitor Palo Alto Networks also saw its shares rise, prompting portfolio managers to trim their positions and secure gains.

In other major market moves, Apple shares traded lower as Tim Cook concluded his 15-year tenure as chief executive. John Ternus is scheduled to assume the role on Tuesday, facing the challenge of following a highly successful 15-year reign.

The broader market was weighed down by commodity volatility as West Texas Intermediate oil prices jumped 2% to trade above $85 per barrel following the geopolitical escalations. The surge in crude prices raised concerns about its negative effect on stocks tied to the commodity.

Other stocks that saw trading activity during the session included SLB, NV, Aon, and PG&E. Investors also monitored the rapid-fire updates at the close of the trading day.
