OpenAI ChatGPT ads reach $1 billion annualized revenue run rate

OpenAI has reached a $1 billion annualized advertising revenue run rate through its global expansion of ChatGPT Ads, providing a crucial growth pillar ahead of its anticipated 2027 initial public offering.

OpenAI announced Monday that its ChatGPT Ads unit has achieved a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate. The milestone arrives as the artificial intelligence company prepares for a potential initial public offering in 2027 or earlier, having confidentially filed for the U.S. listing earlier this year.

Advertising represents a critical new revenue stream for the company as it seeks to accelerate overall growth before going public. The business currently displays promotions to users on the free tier and the lower-priced Go subscription plan.

To sustain this momentum, OpenAI is expanding its global footprint. Starting Monday, advertisers in India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa can purchase ChatGPT ads directly through the company's Ads Manager platform.

The Ads Manager tool was previously available only in the United States, where the company began testing advertisements earlier this year. OpenAI noted that the platform has successfully attracted small- and medium-sized businesses, which now account for a material share of the advertising division.

The division has seen rapid initial traction in its domestic market. In April, the company revealed that its U.S. advertising pilot surpassed a $100 million annualized run rate just six weeks after launching.

While international advertisers currently represent a growing portion of total ad revenue, OpenAI did not disclose specific figures for those markets. The expansion places the company in direct competition with established digital advertising giants.

OpenAI is challenging the market dominance of Alphabet’s Google and Meta, the parent company of Facebook. Both of those legacy technology firms generate hundreds of billions of dollars in annual advertising revenue.

Evaluating growth targets

Despite the rapid growth, some market observers suggest the company may miss its internal targets. Emarketer AI analyst Nate Elliott described the $1 billion milestone as both incredibly impressive and terribly disappointing.

Elliott pointed out that the current run rate indicates OpenAI is falling well short of its $2.5 billion advertising revenue target for 2026. The company will need to accelerate its monetization efforts significantly to close that gap over the next year.
