Strategy Acquires $370 Million in Bitcoin Following $602 Million Equity Sale
Strategy funded its first Bitcoin acquisition in two months by issuing common stock, signaling continued aggressive cryptocurrency accumulation despite a steep decline in its own share price over the past year.
Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) acquired 4,603 Bitcoins for $369.7 million over the past week. This marks the corporate buyer’s first entry into the cryptocurrency market in two months. The latest tranche was executed at an average price of $80,318 per coin, which sits above the recent spot rate.
The company financed this acquisition through a $602.80 million common stock offering. Capital allocation priorities were clearly delineated following the equity raise. After securing the digital assets, Strategy directed $151.8 million of the remaining proceeds toward buying back its preferred stock (NASDAQ: STRC) and bolstering its general cash reserves.
Led by Executive Chairman Michael Saylor, the firm has now amassed a total of 845,050 Bitcoins. The cumulative cost for this massive treasury reserve stands at $63.73 billion. Consequently, the company’s overall average acquisition price across all holdings sits at $75,412 per Bitcoin.
The latest corporate purchase arrives as Bitcoin trades at $77,800. The leading cryptocurrency rallied 24 percent during August, marking its strongest monthly performance since November 2024. This broad market momentum likely provided a favorable window for the company to execute its equity raise.
Despite the underlying asset's recent strength, Strategy’s common stock has faced severe and sustained pressure. The equity has plummeted 63 percent over the trailing twelve months, currently changing hands at $127.31 per share. This stark divergence highlights the growing complexity for institutional investors evaluating the company.
Market participants are increasingly scrutinizing how the firm's equity valuation decouples from the spot price of its primary treasury asset. For financial professionals, the decision to fund digital asset purchases via common equity issuance remains a high-stakes structural strategy.
This approach inherently dilutes existing common shareholders. However, management is betting that the long-term appreciation of Bitcoin will ultimately outpace the rising cost of capital and justify the continued expansion of the balance sheet.
