Indian equities and metals face pressure after Warsh signals potential rate hike

US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s hawkish remarks at Jackson Hole have sharply increased the probability of a September interest rate hike, triggering expected volatility across Indian equities and precious metals.

US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh stated at the Jackson Hole symposium that the central bank will "have work to do" if underlying inflation does not return to the 2 percent target. This hawkish stance immediately shifted market expectations, with the probability of a 25 basis point rate hike at the September 2026 meeting jumping to 55.7 percent from 35.4 percent, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool.

The surge in rate hike expectations drove a sharp rise in short-term US bonds and the US dollar, creating immediate headwinds for risk assets globally. Philip Straehl, Chief Investment Officer at Morningstar Wealth, noted that smaller companies and technology stocks are particularly sensitive to these rising interest rates.

Consequently, Indian benchmark indices including the Nifty 50, Sensex, and Bank Nifty are bracing for a flat-to-negative opening on Monday. Anuj Gupta, a SEBI-registered market expert, warned that the speech will exert pressure on global equities and advised investors to avoid aggressive bets in favor of selective thematic and sector-specific opportunities.

Technical indicators suggest the BSE Sensex remains sideways to mildly positive, stabilizing near its 50-Day moving average but facing a key hurdle at the 200-Day moving average near 78,484. Hitesh Tailor of Choice Equity Broking noted that holding above 77,680 could strengthen the recovery, whereas dropping below 76,800 would invite heavier selling. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 is trading within a 24,000 to 24,400 band, with Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities identifying the lower bound as a critical support level.

The Bank Nifty faces immediate support between 57,100 and 57,200, with resistance at 57,800, according to SAMCO Securities analyst Om Mehra. In the commodities market, the stronger dollar is expected to sustain selling pressure on gold and silver. Gupta described the near-term outlook for both precious metals as flat-to-negative amid the broader market volatility.

COMEX gold faces resistance at $4,550 and $4,620 per ounce, with immediate support at $4,450 and $4,380. Domestically, MCX gold has support at ₹1,52,000 and resistance at ₹1,58,000 per 10 grams. COMEX silver is capped by resistance at $69 and $71 per ounce, while MCX silver faces a ceiling at ₹2,48,000 per kg.
